At least once a week I will have the same argument.. He argues the Bugatti Veryon is the best/fastest car in the world to own ... And I argue it's not all that awesome..

a few of my key points when arguing against include:
- Purchase price.
- Unlikely to ever be driven properly
- Development costs were ridiculous
- I'd rather have a garage full of cars
- It's not faster than an F1 car LOL
- There are faster cars out there in a straight line, top speed and round a track
- For instance you could buy a BEC for 10k...

And on and on..

So who here really is WOW'D by the Veyron?

And who thinks a Veyron is the 'best/fastest' car in the world?

It is the fastest.
It's a lot faster than an F1 car.
Who cares how much it costs to develop.
Too expensive? If you can't afford it, it's none of your concern then is it.
It is the best, in terms of technical specs.

It is the fastest.
PRODUCTION car, yes.
It's a lot faster than an F1 car.
OK, race them both around Silverstone, I bet the Veyron loses. Straight line speed != "the fastest"
Who cares how much it costs to develop.
When they have to sell them at a huge loss, VAG do.
It is the best, in terms of technical specs.
Whoopee. I'll have that one, because on paper its the best. I hate its looks, but I'll have it anyway.

- Purchase price.
well when considering the best/fastest car in the world, it would be siller to factor in price, otherwise you're limited
- Unlikely to ever be driven properly
depends who you are, where you are, how you drive, if you WANT to or not
- Development costs were ridiculous
that doesnt have much to do with if its the best or not, if anything its absolutely fascinating and brilliant how much was spent to create this beast
- I'd rather have a garage full of cars
if you can afford a Veyron and no other car at the same time there is something wrong!
- It's not faster than an F1 car LOL
well, only the V10's and before could reach Veyron top speeds
- There are faster cars out there in a straight line, top speed and round a track
this is true, however, in my opinion 'best' would include luxuries/interior/comfort, and on the luxury part I guess the veyron wins
- For instance you could buy a BEC for 10k...
whats a BEC? And why are you comparing a 10k car to a 1.1m euro engineering masterpiece?
-How many people are really going to drive a Veyron to it's limits?
again, depends who you are/where you are. If I had one I would find somewhere where I could

And on and on..

So who here really is WOW'D by the Veyron?
I am :D

And who thinks a Veyron is the 'best/fastest' car in the world?
Maybe I like the 90s too much but I think of the Mclaren F1 everytime someone says best/fastest!

Haha, replies within quotes, love it :D

I think its brilliant as a technical excercise, but its butt ugly, and hasn't got the flair or the charm of say the McLaren F1 GTR.

That pretty much sums it up.

The Veyron was designed by a committee, whereas the McLaren F1 was designed (more or less) by one man and on the back of a fag packet! (the fag packet bit isn't really true, but it's not far off ...)

It's a lot faster than an F1 car.

haha are you kidding me?

a Veyron weighs TWO TONS, it only has 1000bhp. 500bhp/ton and runs on road tyres.

an F1 car weighs a little over 600kg with driver and has ~750bhp. 1250bhp/ton and can generate 5G in the corners.

Are you mental?

All i'll say on this matter is, give me a ferrari F40 any day.

Aero

Indeed. As C&SC's Richard Heseltine put it:

"....stumble across a cluster of over-imbibed motoring hacks and, without fail, they'll cite the scary but alluring Ferrari F40 as being the greatest supercar of them all. Not the best, but undoubtedly the greatest. And they're right. It rocks."

Faster than an F1 car? No. I think maybe he meant in top speed, but either way if an F1 car was setup to do a high speed run with a long top gear and minimal downforce, it could probably beat the Veyron? Not sure.

An old road-legal Corvette (with air conditioning and a stereo) was quicker in 1988.....so the top speed's nothing to shout about! Not really a production car though, they only built one although it was a 'factory' car.

Have to say the Veyron's very impressive, regardless.

It is without question the most impressive production car ever built in my opinion and a true technical tour de force with the most rounded and broad set of capabilities seen in such a car. Just because the SSC Ultimate Aero TT may have run a quicker top speed does not mean its better as it most certainly isn’t unless the ONLY important factor is top speed, and even then the Veyron could (and has) been made quicker. The SSC is a parts bin special built to go quickly and is far more of a compromise. To call the Veyron a big TT is to praise it very highly. Not because the TT is a great car but because they have built something that has the quality and build integrity of a TT but at the same time can run at 250mph over and over again without overheating, needing servicing every 20 miles or needing anything out of the norm while at the same time it won’t stall at anything below maximum attack and can be parked and driven around Monaco without straining your legs to near breaking point!

It’s top speed is potentially quicker than an F1 car but Indycars with 900 BHP did LAP Indianapolis at close to 250mph hitting over 260mph on the straight in their heyday so sort the aero on an F1 car and it will do much the same. Porsche 917’s were hitting 246mph in 1970/71 at Le Mans with 650bhp because they were built to do that and change the config of and F1 car enough and it would be as quick as a Veyron I suspect and lets be clear around say Silverstone an F1 car would probably lap the Veyron every 3 or 4 laps.

Is it the best car in the world? Subjective
Is it the fastest production car in the world? In absolute statistical terms no
Is it the most rounded and impressive road car? I think without question

Would I choose one over an F40? Nope or over many cars because what it does lack for me is that special something that makes me all wibbly wobbly that you can't put your finger on. F40 does, Miura does, Zonda does too…

I was referring to straight line speed.

An F1 car can be configured to go faster in a straight line - just reduce the downforce produced and make the gears longer. Obviously they alter all these settings between races depending on whether the track has lots of long straights or lots of tight corners etc...
