Which ever you look at it, it's isn't "a lot faster than a F1 car"... Besides, as recently as 2006 an F1 car achieved a speed of 246MPH. Amazing feat for a machine with open wheels and a mere normally aspirated 3-litre engine. Apples and oranges though really.

The Veyron is horrid! Ugly, overweight and I get the impression it would be dog slow round a track. What's the point?

On the contrary, I think that is its genius. A car limited to 253~ mph that my gran could drive comfortably. Its dangerously user friendly for such a fast car. We've all seen Hamilton try his hand at F1, and I certainly dont have the neck muscles.. so even if I could buy an F1 car.. it would be wasted on me.. if I had the money I would buy a Veyron, its the fastest I can go, comfortably. This can be interpreted as dull. The supercar freaks mantra states clearly that the vehicle should be trying to kill you at all times, ala Koenegsisgiessgess, Murcielago LP640s and F430 Scuderiaririos. The veyron doesnt fit this bill, although, obviously, 250mph at the right foot can still do the damage.

I don’t understand why people compare it to a F1 car, yes an F1 car can go faster if you just tune it for straight lines but the point is the Bugatti Veyron can go at these amazing speeds, but at the same time you feel the comfort that matches a Rolls Royce! In my opinion if you do not at the very least admire the Bugatti Veyron as one of the top 5 best cars ever made you haven’t got a clue about cars. What annoys me, is when people say that the only people that drive Bugatti Veyron are people that don’t know anything about cars and have only bought it for its price tag to show off how much money they have! This is such rubbish! Those idiots don’t realize that you cant just buy a Bugatti Veyron, Bugatti choose you, which makes sense to me because if you are making a loss on a car, you want it to be in the hands of someone who truly appreciates and knows what their doing. In my opinion Bugatti is an engineering masterpiece and they have done what no other car manufacturer could have done even with all the money in the world. Speed, luxury and reliability. No other car can boast these three things which such intensity.

It's the engineering equivalent of a sledge hammer. They designed how they wanted it to look first, realised that it really wasn't the best shape for going fast so they just kept adding turbos until it went fast enough. Which in turn created all kinds of interesting problems to engineer, like requiring 401 radiators to keep it cool.

In a way I think it makes it all the more impressive, but the bloody mindedness of it doesn't do it for me. If you are looking for a true engineering masterpiece, you need only look for the McLaren F1 :)
 
Surprised this threads still going.. At the end of the day, most people will agree to disagree.

I think anyone with millions could develop the car Bugatti made.. lots of money, a good engine, 4 turbos, some tech, some maths, some clever people and some more money would produce something that would not struggle to compete with a Veryron.
