I can't imagine any polish I own changes the clear at a molecular level, wouldn't you need to use heat, chemicals or a current to do that?

No need to get anal, just trying to summarize the way polishing changes the shape of the paint / clear coat at a level you can't see without using a PTG.

My apologies if i used a word that caused offence to you.

/Insert string violin clip

Not offence, just something completely inaccurate and trying to make polishing sound like something from a Materials Science PhD project.

Do you think he just wiki's everything being discussed so he can casually pop in and make it look like he has a detailed level of knowledge on literally everything, ever?

not this again

My offence this time ? using the phrase "molecular level" to try to explain its at a level you can't see. You guys are getting more and more desperate to have a pop.

Crikey.

Not offended squire, just that there is enough complexity surrounding "detailing" without complicating matters further. If I were being anal, I would have mentioned the other mistakes in your post.

"Car looks nice"

"I've restructured the ionic bonds of the acrylic co-polymers. Took me all day."

would have been a much better choice of word in hindsight. Agreed.

Seriously amazed at how sad some people in this thread are "OMG he used a word that wasn't right"

"Squire ! bring me my high horse"

They're not really interchangeable words. Somebody who is asking a basic question is only going to get confused if they think polishing is molecular transformation. But yes, seems trivial. On the other hand, one of the better facets of this forum is the self-regulation of lazy facts and misinformation. It's not the most wonderful atmosphere to post in sometimes but you do tend to get (sometimes eventually) decent information and not regurgitated, inter-forum half-truths from self-styled experts.

I'm on a hyphen high.

I need to do my summer detail, its long over due. I fancy using a machine to do the polish but I have noob questions if you don't mind.

What is a rotary or dual action polisher?

Clean your car have a Silverline for £42, will this do me? They recommend buying a 125mm backing plate, what else would I need?

I just want to make polishing easier then using my AG SRP by hand, I'm not too fussed about swirl mark removal atm, my silver car hides them pretty well.

Basically I'm lazy and I want to know if a machine will make my day polishing and waxing easier lol.

Thanks

I'd recommend Gtechniq P1 for polish. It reduces the chance of error and bad judgement in terms of working the polish - it is a very consistent polish where level of correction is defined by choice of pad, the polish is used across the board.

Whether you choose a rotary or da is entirely up to you. A DA is safer, and easier to get a refined finish for a beginning but it is likely to be slower and less comfortable to use.

A rotary is great for outright grunt, but can be difficult to get a hologram free finish on more difficult (dark, soft/sticky) paint. It can also do some damage in the hands of an idiot.

Fwiw, I started with a rotary but have found the need for a DA for more difficult paints as I mentioned previously and as such I've ordered one along with a better rotary :)

Machine polishing is really used for swirl removal. It can be used to apply wax but its kinda of a waste of money in my opinion. If you want get the Dual action polisher because its less likely you'll burn the into the paint.

Yeah you will need a backing plate as well as a pad but sooner or later these will add up.

Detailing: Serious Business.

It is. Also a hobby that is extremely attractive to women and a great point of conversation with people you've just met. By the way, you don't use wax to keep the polish on the paint like you said in your previous post, JUST THOUGHT I'D MENTION THAT.

If I jumped in to a thread about oil and started talking about the shear strength at a microscopic scale instead of molecular scale, I'd hope somebody would correct me.

I use Colinite 476s for that purpose, keeps the SRP underneath fresher for longer, well....6 months or so in the Southern coastal weather anyway.
