*** The Car Cleaning Thread ***

Right so i've just had the chance to clean my new weekend toy so it's a kind of "new car post" without doing a new thread and a cleaning one too.

Quick details, 2005 STi with DCCD, bought with 29k miles, 18" WR1 style alloys, Tein suspension etc. etc.<snip>

Very tidy :)

My car has loads of black tar like specs on the paint work, it looks like it's all come up from the road. Anyone got any ideas on a product that'll get rid of them?

That Tardis stuff looks like it'll do the job! There is a warning about it softening paint however. Have you used if before?

Aye, I haven't used it before but make sure you're careful and you wash it off completely afterwards, I think you can water it down as well to reduce risk but obviously potency too.

I think I'll give it a go, I'll clay if afterwards too, that seems to make a difference..

There are fine scratches from car washes and things, they're not too bad, but would a t-cut take care of them? My only concern is leaving swirl marks in the paint. I did my old E30, and that left marks, but looked 100% better than it did, and as it was an old car so it didn't really matter, and you didn't really notice. This one however, would need to be perfect. Can it be done properly without a polisher?

Can anyone help with plastic chrome on my exterior. The car is 5 years old and has been looked after but the trim is cheap and covered in small white oxidation spots. I have tried brasso, clay etc but nothing seems to work.

New kit is very expensive and a scrapped car would surely have the same problem.

As a last resort, I looked in to various options to such as shadow and matte black - has anyone tried this and is this easier to keep clean?

PERL works wonders on external plastics, but i am not sure about chrome though, you can give it a go, for a tenner its worth a try, plus you can use it on leathers, tyres and even internal trims.

^^^ Thanks, will take a look at that too. Gently sounds better!

I have no idea where this stuff came from, a new road or something?

It's tar, the road are covered in tar...so is your drive way, if you have one so TARIS will strip it if you spill it on it.

Obliterate doesn't do that...although I wouldn't test it lol

Best way is to

Wash car, clay it so the wax is off.
Dap Tardis/oblitarate on a microfibre and wipe it on the affected area.
Rinse the car with water

What do people recommend for the rubber/plastic exterior trim? I've noticed the bits of trim around my drivers side window is looking a little patchy/streaky...

PERL, this stuff is magic.

Dab a bit in a micro fibre to wipe or dilute it in a spray bottle, it works.

I use it on the rubber trim, the front grill, the wing mirror trim, the door trim, interior plastic, any left over I spray it on the tyres like tyre dressing.

I use autoglym bumper care.

Speaking of which, gave the car a proper going over this weekend.

Would someone mind rating my basket before i buy? I'm on a bit of a budget so if money can be saved somewhere then great. I got some free Angel Wax with my subscription to Evo and its meant to be perfectly decent.
