Picked my X3 up from BMW after a brake service, they washed and cleaned it, I'm not particularly precious about it but was surprised that they washed it with a sponge and dried with a chamois (saw on dashcam footage). I would have thought modern manufacturers would be on to microfibers by now!

Sponges and Chamois are cheaper, that's why garages will use them. They are also a lot more likely to swirl your paintwork.

This is the reason why a lot of us specifically ask for the car not to be washed and cleaned.

Yep, I'm aware of that, I actually cleaned it before I brought it in to reduce the chance of them swirling the paint!

Not so sure about that, chamois are a good deal more expensive than MF cloths. Good deal better too IMO, they actually get he surface dry instead of smearing water all over it.
Recently changed to using a reassuringly expensive wash mitt and towel. Honestly it's just the same as the cheap ones, doesn't dry properly and leaves the paintwork thrashed after a few washes no matter how careful you are.

Hi all, not read the thread I need some advice.

My car seats are pretty abysmal in that they look like someones done God knows what over them. Whats the simplest thing to clean them up and remove what look like water stains essentially?

I did buy a cleaner can with a bristle on top but that's apparently just added more stain marks.

Cloth or leather?

If it's cloth then Autoglym's interior shampoo works well:

https://www.amazon.co.uk/Auto-Glym-Interior-Shampoo-500ml/dp/B00114WOBC

I just spray it a little bit directly on the seats, leave for a minute or too, before then spraying lightly with water and then wipe with a dry cloth.

Use a wheel cleaner currently, but in future might switch to poorboy wheel sealant or similar and wash with shampoo instead.

I see this as a cost saving as in theory it should last longer, and using shampoo also means less cost.

Tried tonight, seems to have done something but will be able to see what it does overnight.

Annoyingly didn't get a before shot of the worst seat but I have one of the drivers side so I'll post a comparison eventually
