Congrats on the adoption, and also the new car :)

As for budget it depends on how far you want to go with keeping it clean and looking after it.

The absolute basics you need are 2x Buckets, some car Shampoo, a Wash mitt and a drying towel - that is the minimum you need for a basic wash that will keep the car looking clean.

After that the sky is the limit
Thank you. That helps :)

I personally would say use the washmitt posted above for wheels/really dirty areas (arches etc) and get a lambswool washmitt for the bodywork.

For the snow foam lance that £20 ebay one seems to do the job perfectly fine for me.

I also find that two drying cloths (like - https://www.amazon.co.uk/Microfibre...id=1481552274&sr=1-2&keywords=microfibre&th=1) is better than one - especially when its only about a pound more. One is then used to do the excess water removal dry and the other does the dry dry.

I don't like those noodle washmitts for bodywork. The megs lambswool one I have is great, and is lasting really well.

I also think lambswool is the way forward, though the Megs one I had lasted about 4 months tops....all the fluff was falling out and the skin was tearing. The one I had was lambswool one size and a gauze (for bug removing - I never used it) on the other.

I have the same one, but it seems to be going strong 18 months later! I only use the gauze bit for cleaning my wiper blades!

Hi all.

I'll be picking up my new car soon and was looking for some recommendations on what I should do to best protect the paintwork when I get it. Anything specific I should get to do it myself?

Also going to pick up an Autobrite snowfoam addon for my Nilfisk washer, and some Magifoam wash.

Alternatively, suggestions for a good detailer around the Glasgow area would also be helpful.

Thanks!

Yeah my megs lambs wool one lasted a poor amount of time. One wash it jsut suddenly started shedding then all i was left with was the skin. Had to go out mid wash with wet brakes to get a noodle one. Not happy with it at all tbh considering I've probably used it around 10 times or so.

same here last was it started falling apart.. must have had 5-8 washes out of it if that... not impressed.

I'm glad I'm not the only one that had the issue, I got the megs lambwool mitt and the magnetic drying towel thingy. I didn't like either, I'm starting to not really ratre megs tbh. There quick wax stuff isn't that bad but the others I've used have been a bit of a let down.

Magifoam is useless at cleaning. Bilt Hamber autofoam is £17 at polished bliss with free delivery.

Strip your car of any sealants from the dealership (wash with fairy liquid will do), decontaminate the paint, even new cars will have contamination from transport. For that you'll want to use an iron remover, tar remover and then clay. Polish, something like autofinesse triple / bilt hamber cleanser (unless you want to correct the paintwork) then apply your protection of choice.
