I tend to agree class is not about money you've made in this lifetime but more about your parent's and grandparent's social background and your attitude and culture/life outlook.
I've been told and would probably agree that if your parents come from council accomodation i suppose you wouldn't be anything else than working class but there's plenty of families with a working class style and outlook that live in private accomodation (sometimes very well off) so is not so clear cut.
Same with so called 'chavs'. I heard it stands for 'Council Housed And Violent' but know plenty of chavs (more like chav wannabees) who's parents are very middle class, their parents are nothing like them.
Chav culture is something you can pick up, if you hang around with other people with similar attitudes then people will label you the same.
What about accents? Can this be used to detect someone's class?
I'd consider myself coming from a middle class background but hung around with people from all social backgrounds in my school years and developed a fairly strong cockney accent. Many middle class people might label me the wrong way because of this.
There's plenty of people in london where i was raised who speak in a jamaican patois accent, many have middle class backgrounds but their mates tend to speak like this - something you might do when you're younger to be cool and fit in but can't see them speaking like this when they start their professional careers.
I hate to say it and disagree but many people may judge your class by the way you dress as well, but anyone can wear a suit!
Same with wearing a hoodie, doesn't automatically make you a chav.

Does going to private school and a reasonably good uni make you upper middle class then? I seem to get the impression that that is why people are calling Kate upper middle class.

I've no idea if the queen still holds the belief that those demands were right or not. But i'm betting there was no way in hell William was going down that line. They couldn't have controlled it if they tried.
Not really, you can't judge someone's class by what school or university they went to. The only real way is to judge by their etiquette and interests, just for example I know a friend at Eton and he is much less middle class than me.
Usually upper middle class would share common interests, but wealth is still going to be quite varied.
Class is more to do with what your parents do/did and how you were brought up. Typically, middle class would mean that your parents are "professionals" (doctor, lawyer, etc) and went to university. This would probably mean that you would end up a private school.
Working class would mean that your parents didn't go to university and do a more "normal" job. You probably went to a "normal" school.

The social underclass don't work at all now. They just breed, claim benefits and refuse to work and spend their days dossing about in council houses with their kids running amuck on council parks drinking.
It gives a bad name to the sort of people who would traditionally be working class because they hold an unskilled job (eg Manual labourer, bin man, warehouse operative etc..) who worked damned hard.

As many have said you do not become upperclass just by coming into money, its something you a born into and its more to do with you ancestry and behaviour. You can be upper class and poor.
However I think you can move from being working class to middle class by educating your self and making a little money, this normally comes with a slightly modulated outlook in life and a change in behaviour.
I also see nothing wrong with being working class, there are many perfectly respectable families who work hard, pay their taxes and live a normal life but there is a group of society who are thought of as working class but actually are just scum who should not be associated with the hard working common working class man
