A mate moved to texas 2 years ago. 1 year ago I went to visit on an exhange rate of 1.93 from the post office, and got lots of cheap clothes which in my mind helped ofset the cost of the flight (as I needed clothes anyway and they cost a LOT here).

I was planning to go next year - but the current rate (again off the post office) is just under 1.70.

I am a student and dont have masses of money but I didnt realise the pound had dropped so much so quickly! I am seriously wondering if I can still go.
Last time I stayed at his house, so accomodation was free. This time we were going to his house again but were going to get a last minute hol for a week in the USA while we were there, assuming it would cost very little in terms of our money.

Is it likely to drop further (against US dollar and Euro)??. I expect so, but I have no sensible reasons or proof to back it up.

And assuming your taking £2000 does your holiday really rest upon £300-400?

In 2003 the rate was $1.5=£1.

I didnt know it was as low as that as I was only 14/15 then:p

I would not be taking £2000. I was hoping about £650 flight with insurance, although flight prices have claimed quite a lot in the last year.

Was hoping for flight plus circa $1500, so yes the holiday could easily rest on that much, as if it is leaning towards the £2000 total mark I would just say **** that I can pay a huge chunk towards my uni fees this year:)

The main problem is the strength of the pound to the Euro. 1.25 Euro's to the pound - ouch :( Suddenly France is more expensive for most things than Britain for us.

Drove to Eurodisney last week. £1.40 per litre for super unleaded at one filling station. Not good especially if you drive a 4.2 V8.

Expensive little trip that. Theme park prices with a really bad exchange rate means £9 for a hot dog and coke!

When I was in NY in August I went to a random Subway, 1 foot long, a sub, 2 drinks it was just under $8.

The relevance of this is?

I went to New York when it was something ridiculously high like $1.95 to £1. I'm off to Ibiza next week and the exchange rate is woefully low. It was 1.22 a couple weeks back, then it went down to 1.19 now it is back up to 1.20 at the M&S near me. Gonna have to bite the bullet and buy some currency soon though.
Personally only if you can really afford it, go, if not, do like you said and pay your uni fees off.

Don't you mean "lack of"? ;)

Especially against the Euro it has lost a lot, on my recent holiday I was only getting 1.19-1.22 to the pound

If this continues, there won't be much reason to remain in the UK. I'll start looking for Euro-paying jobs soon at this rate.

Going to the US on Friday, was kicking myself for not getting my dollars in advance.

Rate 2 weeks ago was like £1 = $1.80

Rate when I was going to Thailand & Laos in June/July was closer to £1 = $1.90 (I took dollars to Laos but then converted it to Baht when back in Thailand... d'oh!)

Soon the euro and pound will be 1:1. :(

I miss the pre-euro days.

This is what the Government want, I'll wager. That way they can bring the Euro in (probably without a referendum or any public consultation either).

While I like the GBP, if there was parity, I'd probably not be that bothered myself as it'd make life easier with not having to change currency up all the time for my visits to the continent :)

Got my Zune before they jack up the prices over here, so happy about that, and the worse the exchange rate against the dollar the better; my blogging is paid in dollars. Up to £175 a month over £150 now :D
