The Deep Net

Going from most of the replies here, one visit to the dark web will give you a heroin addiction and HIV. It’s just a section of the internet, the police aren’t waiting to break down your door the second you log on, it’s really nothing to get excited about.

Unless you want to buy some drugs or are a spy and need to contact your handler there’s not a lot of point in going there.

If you take the necessary precautions and you can do anything. I have an old laptop I'm going to use load tails onto a USB , I already use a (paid for) VPN. Then I'm going to run Tor and have a look see whats so terrifing about the Deep/Dark web. If it all goes wonky (I dont see how it will) I'll drop the whole lot in to the nearest skip.

Just do a Google image search for "Tub Girl" and save yourself all the hassle.

IF you access the deep net without tor, or you mess up your tor settings you will get placed on a list.

So i'm warning you now stay far away unless you want FBI kicking in your door.

Jesus, there are some strange people out there... DO NOT Google "TUB GIRL" image whatever you do...lol

Google lemon party for a tor guide. (This isn't a troll thing, it's just name of the guide)

I like how the responses here have varied from "it's just the internet stuck in the 90s" to "no one should ever visit" :p

Can always trust GD to give you a broad view point.

TBH it’s basiclaly the same thing isn’t it? Why do you want to go back to the 90s Internet of slow speeds and poorly rendered websites when we have 2017s web? :p

Malware. When the FBI et al, compromise an illegal website they sometimes install malware on it which subsequently infects the users machine, such as a malicious javascript which phones home.

Easy enough to avoid that by using a sandboxed environment or disabling js or the like.

The other half are caught because they are having dodgy stuff shipped to their address and then when questioned own up to it.

Most of it’s even more mundane than that. Many of the website creators have been caught because the servers themselves have been compromised and their (non tor) IPs/billing info can be seen, or because they use the same/similar forum name on legal non tor websites which leads back to their location and interests/IPs.

I believe JS is turned off by default on Tor now (for the reason you mention).

Ah good ol'tub girl ... I remember that going around.

It was the very first e-mail I received from another person (a soon to be ex-mate!) back in the "good ole days" of dial-up when a picture would display a top section, then take 30secs to buffer leaving me confused as to what the "brown water arch" was before quickly showing the rest of the picture. I was in a coin-operated internet cafe and my surprised shout had about 3 people turn and see my screen as I was frantically trying to close the AOL browser. Ah, fun times :D

Well. I said I was going to. Nothing REALLY horrifically shocking, a few places to buy firearms which is quite alarming. Lots of seedy looking sites mostly porn, couple of live stream websites (they charge a fortune).
Didnt see any Hitman for hire sites perhaps they are all taking a break or all gone to a Hitman convention in Florida.
Lots of Drugs sites.. you pay with Bitcoin and they will deliver them where-ever you choose. (Nans House) :) Theres a few strange social group sites, which is ironic an anonymous social group...not very social.

All in all, I found it quite interesting and I'm glad I had a look, just to ease my curiosity. Not in a hurry to get back there..

I have run several Malware, Spyware & Antivirus scans on my Laptop thats all good, I'v had a shower and checked, nothing fallen off yet. So I really dont see what all the fuss is about...
Poor old Ross he really did get the ****** end of the stick didnt he. PS I Should have bought a couple of grands worth of Bitcoin when it very first appeared ....:)

I had a similar experience with “snuff porn” - someone mentioned it earlier - turns out it’s got nothing at all to do with tobacco.

People make me sad :(

I don't know what the hell is up with some people. There's a load of snuff stuff sent around in whatsapp quite freely as if it's meant to be funny.

Is everyone really that desensitised and lacking in empathy these days that they actually laugh at this stuff?

I keep telling friends not to send me that crap. I have to wipe my phone every time I travel and it's making me paranoid!

I think now after having a look round on there and thats ALL I did (I did not enter any pay4porn sites) a lot of the stuff you read about or see on Youtube is bull****. Sure there are hidden market places and darknet websites but if your only looking you have bugger all to worry about...Probably a little different if you get caught by the Mrs ordering a load of AK's and having them shipped to her mum's house :)

You do get the sence of excitment though but its no worse than walking around Soho or the Dam on a saturday night.

Hmmm I have just read an article about the Deep Web being set out in layers. There are supposed to be 8 different layers in total. The "normal" internet is at level 1. The content of the net get more interesting/dangerous with every layer you go down. You need different encrytion software for each level. Tor being used to access levels 1-4... Level 8 is called The Marianas Level, after the Marianas Trench (Deepest part of the Ocean) Someone has a very cryptic imagination..
Does anyone know if this is true or just BS ?

Meh. Deep/dark just means stuff that you won't find via Google. There's a whole spectrum of stuff from people who just want to be "off the grid" for puritanical privacy reasons, to people sharing illegal content (of various type and degree). It's not organised, it's completely unorganised in fact - and many want it to stay that way.

The media would have you believe it's all some great pyramid organisation with Captain Evil at the top of the pile, ensuring everything is strictly organised and indexed but only accessible to those with the secret handshake. It's not. It's completely organic and wild.

Most of the stuff is on the Tor network and thus only available to anyone who knows the Onion address. There's not really anyway to "google" this stuff. There's a few sites that list known addresses but even those are usually just the mild stuff.

Some don't even bother with Tor and just have private SSH tunnels amongst themselves for sharing whatever it is they are sharing (probably kiddie porn).

As Jestar says it just isn't that organised and the boundaries aren't that defined. The web is just one service that runs over the internet.
