The disappearance of Nicola Bulley

Yeah, I could definitely see this given the correct algorithm. I'm sure there was a story about a supermarket (Tesco?) identifying that a woman was pregnant and sending her coupons for baby stuff before she even knew herself, purely based on the products she was buying? (This may have been some urban myth :p).

Unfortunately I doubt they'd ever consider using this data for some kind of "good" purpose like this, unless they can make money from it.

I heard that story too, I thought it was FB and a young girl though, so likely a myth, but conceivable, if you'll forgive the pun.

But yeah, they'll already commercialise that info. I know when i was very down and on medication i got served up self-help books and courses and dubious consumable products claiming to give you a boost.

A person or corpse with an active phone can be traced from cell to cell, so a person wanting to disappear or someone wanting to hide a corpse would not want a phone on them.

The press and general media have certainly latched on to this case, it could be become the new Maddie.

A 3/4/5G phone with an active call/data session can be located to within 10 metres. One in coverage, but without an active connection will routinely perform location updates so that the network knows which cells to page it through if it has an incoming call. Depending on how the host network is configured, this would give at least location accuracy in the order of 500 metres at the time of the update.

So it seems her and boyfriends company is about to get struck off by companies house. Financial difficulties. The plot thickens

For an expert in the field of search and rescue with multiple decades experience from a military background to come out and say, "something isn't right here and it doesn't make sense".

One can only imagine that there is most certainly something fishy going on. I also suspect that caravan park with its broken camera, should really be the focus at this point. It's just awfully convenient that the one place she could have escaped or been abducted was also the one place where no CCTV is present. For her to essentially run away would require planning and money, so I'd be potentially starting to look at financial records to see if money had been stashed and if money was being spent and where.

Obviously the police may have already ruled that out, and therefor no need to mention it.

Have to admit for the search team to. Come out and say what they have there are seeds of doubt being sown.

I had a look at the river on Google satellite and wasn't sure if there was a weir or something not far down stream?

This is very bizarre one

I think that's about all anyone can do at the moment, as nothing is making sense.

Or we could abstain from polluting social media with our 'insights' and 'readings' of the matter. Our 'theories' mean nothing to the people who are involved in this (victim, family, friends, police, people who actually know what they're talking about) and there's a weird undercurrent where some posters want to be seen as the one who cracked the case or 'called it'.

Quite the update:

In an update Lancashire Police said: "We can say with confidence that by reviewing CCTV, Nicola has not left the field during the key times via Rowanwater, either through the site itself or via the piece of land at the side.

"Also, we can say that she did not return from the fields along Allotment Lane or via the path at the rear of the Grapes pub on to Garstang Road.

"Our inquiries now focus on the river path which leads from the fields back to Garstang Road - for that we need drivers and cyclists who travelled that way on the morning of 27 January to make contact."

Police believe Ms Bulley may have fallen into the River Wyre, but they "remain open minded" and are continuing to carry out a "huge number" of inquiries.

The force said officers have "spoken to numerous witnesses, analysed Nicola's mobile phone and Fitbit and searched the derelict house on the other side of the river as well as any empty caravans in the vicinity".

Ms Bulley had dropped her two daughters, aged six and nine, off at school and then went on her usual dog walk alongside the river.

Her phone, still connected to a Teams call for her job as a mortgage adviser, was found on a bench on a steep riverbank overlooking the water, along with the dog lead and harness on the ground.

Seems like minimal ways out without being spotted on CCTV, its highly unlikely a kidnapper would want her so bad to have the ability to avoid all cameras.

What news stories are ok to speculate about on a web forum and who maintains this list?

The mods to your first point (also human decorum), and I don't believe there is a list and if there were you wouldn't care. What do you think? Is it healthy or interesting or educational or are we 'just asking questions'?

Well given the thread hast been closed this seems to be an acceptable subject to speculate on.

If you dont it like why are reading the thread?
