Or something like a dog running up to someone with wet/cold feet/nose, if there was a scream it was probably quite short as she fell in

Most people discount a lot of noises until they have reason to think about them after they've heard something has happened, even in "quiet" places, especially if it's not repeated/long.

A lad in Star City Cinema died trying to get his phone and the electric chair foot rest crushed him to death. Life is nuts.
