The disappearance of Nicola Bulley

The inquest starts today.

Sorry, I am too busy being a submersible expert to be concerned about this old news.

No, seriously, it will be interesting to see the outcome.

Nicola Bulley died from drowning, with no evidence that she was harmed or had alcohol in her bloodstream, a consultant pathologist has told an inquest.

On Monday, the consultant pathologist Alison Armour said all the evidence suggested Bulley died as a result of drowning.

Her forehead was caked in mud, Armour said, and dirt found in her body was among “typical features we see in cases of drowning”. Her lungs were enlarged and watery fluid was found in her body.

Tiny traces of alcohol were found but they could be explained by a postmortem process involving bacteria, she said.

The coroner asked: “At the time of her death she essentially had no alcohol in her bloodstream?” Armour replied: “That’s my opinion.”

Armour was asked if there was evidence Bulley had been assaulted or if there was any third-party involvement. She replied no.

You can die by drowning without being suicide. Plenty of people get into difficulty in the water with sad consequences.

Yes but you said it was virtually impossible to kill yourself by drowning, 25% of the Irish manage it.
I was in a Mental Hospital in 1988 and two patients in there killed themselves in the canal at the back of the hospital.
If there's a will there's a way.

How would you even prove suicide versus accidental drowning with a lack of any note, or something in her messages/search history.

Can't really see this one going any other way than accidental death.

It's a shame we'll never know why the phone was on the bench and not on her person when she went in
Maybe just one of those 'tidying up' / organising things that people sometimes do before taking their own life. Phone will break in water, therefore leave neatly on bench.

Or if it wasn't suicide then left it there while she went down to the river for whatever other reason so it wouldn't get wet.

But yeah guess we will never know unless a new witness (or suspect) turns up.

I do this a lot, I'll often put my phone on a bench seat and if I needed to get up for something I could have an accident and it would still be there giving people on here some alternative motive for it.
Yup

People seem to forget the police etc actively have to run campaigns to remind the public not to put their phones down and leave them unattended, even for a minute in public places, so I can imagine how many people must do it somewhere the risk of theft is a lot lower than the table at a bar or cafe.
