In response to the interest shown in the home cinema thread regarding what it's like in Dubai I thought maybe we could have a dedicated thread for people to post about there experiences of the place. I've never been but would love to go and maybe even emmigrate there if I had the funds. So has anyone got any experiences to post about in this desert oasis?

I've been to the airport. It was hot. The security guards had guns and dogs. I had to remove my belt. There were people sleeping on the floor.

...glad I was able to help. :D

Spent a month there 3 years ago. Don't get me wrong, it was a pleasant stay with nice food, a fantastic social experience and many tourist attractions but I, as many, would say that its a little over-rated.

I played basketball over there and after ten minutes I was finding it extremely difficult to breathe, yet our indian neighbours were running around like there was no tomorrow! Who knows, maybe they got used to the thick, smoggy air or maybe they naturally have extremely high levels of stamina.

BTW, the KFC over there is brilliant.

EDIT -
Forgot to mention, the night life is absolutely brilliant. loved the nightlife, especially with lamborghinis and ferraris zooming past every few minutes or so. Oh and dont even get me started on the amount of Hummers you see over there, theyre practically toys over there and are driven by the youngsters.

Apart from that, yes... over-rated.

Never been there but I would say it would be similar to London but with more exotic architecture. You will find again many cultures just like in London. Although the human right record isn't on top of the list especially with regards to poor skilled south asian labour who virtually built the whole dubai in poor conditions under 45-50C heat;).

If any one wants to experience a true dubai then they should visit places from glitzy 5 -7 stars hotel to labour camps to get the genuine feeling for the dubai rather than just getting stuck in tourist places.

I was there a couple of months ago, I was really expecting las vegas on steroids, its really not all that special.

My wife wanted to move there as Doctors don't do too badly and with how much the property prices have fallen we can afford a really nice place on the Palm island but I would still rather move to America.

I also did feel quite bad at seeing how badly the poor immigrant workers are exploited. They work 12 hours per day 7 days a week for almost no money!

The most horrible, fake and horrendous place on the earth. I had to spend 24 hours there on a stop over and hated every second of it. Everything takes place in massive malls, the streets are dead and anyone in a place of authority treats you terribly.

Oh, and I almost got arrested for drinking water on the metro station. In ~40 degree heat.

Seriously, avoid. So many better arabic countries to go to.

There's no such thing as a hotel over 5 star (except 5S).

I too imagine it much like London. Oppressive, smelly and with a populace that thinks itself above its station.
