The Dubai thread!

I was there a couple of months ago, I was really expecting las vegas on steroids, its really not all that special.

My wife wanted to move there as Doctors don't do too badly and with how much the property prices have fallen we can afford a really nice place on the Palm island but I would still rather move to America.

I also did feel quite bad at seeing how badly the poor immigrant workers are exploited. They work 12 hours per day 7 days a week for almost no money!

Yup and not getting paid on times. This is one major issue I have with Dubai authorities that those who built the city get treated like dirt and I was reading that they aren't allowed anywhere near the glitzy shopping malls incase it looked 'bad' in the eyes of the world.

When Dubai celebrated the Burj Khalifa they should have acknowleged the outstanding contribution of the poor labour who I bet weren't allowed anywhere near the ceremony.

I would like to see Emiratis building their own city. The trouble is imo they don't have the knowledge, skill or the appetite for harsh environmental conditions to build such city.

My sister lives out there and loves it. My mum has been and wants to go back, says its larger than life and an odd mix between tradition and modern/Western culture.

I plan on going out there this year and cannot wait!

Ok so you can get executed for kissing in public and beheaded for holding hadns? But there seems to be no enforcement of driving laws and the motorway is one giant race track:-

Go there frequently for work (or at least I did before the house of cards fell in) and it's not my cup of tea. Vulgar and fake

Just behave yourself if you go there:p

you've gotta love the irony of magick constantly posting about how we're living in an oppressive police state etc and wanting to emigrate to a place where the police genuinely do beat people to death just for saying something they don't like.

If true that has to be the strangest post I have read on OCUK :D

Seriously though, it's all to easy to ignore the atrocities that a country is committing and view it as a nice place to live if you're not in one of the oppressed minority groups. If people had more morals they wouldn't go there.

uninteresting unless you love shopping malls. no culture and vulgar camel herders who happened to be sitting on a wealth of oil. hopefully move away from oil sooner than later so we won't have threads like this, as well as the obvious benefits (environment, wars, freedom, etc...)

if you'd actually followed the story you'd realise that he was drunk and stoned off his face and tried to throw a hotel worker and then himself off a balcony. He had to be restrained and was arrested then put in a cell where he choked on his own vomit.

Uk media loves to hate dubai
