The Dubai thread!

Agree what an idiot. Why is it some Brits automatically assume that our law is the only law around the world? I don't particularly agree with the crime of jaywalking in the USA but I would respect it while I was over there.

Unfortunately, in the West, many people think in this way - our law is the best and is what should be followed everywhere. They have no respect for other cultures/laws.

Would never want to travel to the UAE or Dubai. Have you seen the way they treat their foreign labourers? It's truly disgraceful!! Supposedly, the notorious Blackwater founder Erik Prince, has been hired by the "dictatorship" that is their Royal family to "protect" the country against protests etc. And whos has he hired...South African and Colombian mercenaries...nice. Their no better than Gaddafi or Al-Assad.

Of course the funniest thing about it is when the british complain of foreigners coming here and not respecting their laws and cultures etc etc...not that i condone such activity myself..as the saying goes When in rome do as the romans do.

This is brilliant.

Dubai is a 92% Expat population. If there was a protest a la Bahrain/Syria et al, you could contain it within a Starbucks.

True but at least the foreigners in Dubai go home when they cease to be economically useful. I've said it before but I think we can learn a lot from the UAE's enlightened immigration policies.

Rather than start a new thread I'll revive this one. What would people recommend doing in Dubai on a 2 day stopover? A list of the must-do's would be nice!

+1

Am heading there in two weeks time with a bunch of mates, for about 6 days. Recommendations welcome!

havnt been to either abudhabi or dubai but i have been to beirut once for 3 days. it was absolutely lovely. went up the mountains it was snowy and cold, down the mountain it was nice and hot! the scenery was absolutely beautiful and the people there were so calm and nice. it has sharia law there in lebanon but didnt realize it. there was a lot of christians there ( plus churches ), and women not wearing headscarfs. ofcourse there wwere a lot of women wearing headscarfs but not the complete burkha full body wear. i know lebanon is a shia country and not a sunni one but not sure whether that has got do with anything.

my point is that britian should stop telling other countrys on how to live/what to wear and stop generally telling other countrys how to run their culture. it is up to them to decide not us.

It doesn't strike me as being the epicentre of fun.

There seems like a fair bit to do, places to visit and relax - i cant see why it wont be fun.

Just reading through the thread - how brits can expect to do what they do here in this country in another one is really mind boggling.

If their law states you cant do it - then deal with it, and respect it. simple. People are so quick to hate against the Arab or Muslim states, without knowing or understanding the culture. Typical media in this country brainwashing the public, who lap it all up.

Only one of my mates drink - its no big deal to him - if you need a drink to have a good time then there is something wrong with you IMO. Its the company you are with that counts - we can't wait, and are going to have a great time.

The mormons do Dubai. Sounds like a book.

Went to stay there for a week with my brother who works over there and it is indeed amazing, there's so much to do and some of the scenery is immense.

That said, as much I enjoyed visiting the place, it's not somewhere I would enjoy living in permanently, just too busy for me, I like the quiet life. Plus the heat in summer is ridiculous - soon as I left the apartment, it was like a race against time untill meltdown. Fortuately though air conditioning is pretty much everywhere, so you rarely spend that long outside in the heat.

Regarding the holding hands business, it's complete nonsense. All they ask is that you wear modest clothing and refrain from taking part in inappropriate sexual behaviour in public. I saw plenty of people holding hands and what not, there wasn't any issue. If you want to have sex in public, go somewhere else.

From what I am understanding, those who have been there loved it.
Those who have never been there, seem to hate it.
