Because they've adopted it into "American English" probably, so a number of Americans probably think it's an Englsih word. Then again, those same people probably think they speak "American" rather than "English".

Talking about language purity when referring to English makes me laugh. This language has single-handedly abducted and raped more languages than anything else humanity came up with to date...

also pretty sure it's commonly used here to refer to certain medical procedures.
