Hahaha selective?

Selective as in it was whoever stopped in the street when asked.

Exactly..

Hundreds asked...only one broadcast...

= Agenda

Social media now negates this.

I lived in Rickmansworth growing up...I played outside for hours...coming in at 9pm some nights in the summer if I could get away with it....

Chasing Skinheads ,stealing milk, jumping cars, messing about....

I now look at my 12yr old nephew and sigh....Dropped him off at scouts..."make sure you see him walk in the doors" (mum said)

The internet and media and social comment has stifled freeedom and bred anxiety and paranoia

I'm glad I had a childhood

But thats nothing to do with media thats todo with your parents and your siblings having difdernt parenting styles.

Everything youve mentioned still happens its just kids also film it and stick it on youtube now too.

Been with it since the beginning of time. The time saved, the business, the wealth and breadth of knowledge has enriched my life in many ways. It is truly an amazing medium.

I think social media by-proxy has heavily degraded a lot of peoples actual social skills.
The proliferation of smartphones, tablets, phablets etc means people don't actually need to meet up with their friends for a chat, go down the pub or whatever.

I have nieces and nephews who spends all their free time on their technological marvels instead of actually going out and playing with friends. It takes an act of willpower to just put down the phone and go out, and a lot of kids nowadays just don't have that.

I largely agree with this although I didn't jump cars on my BMX or chase skinheads (I was more likely to get chased). My brother and I had a childhood of the 70s and 80s. We were out all day in the summer holidays with our bikes or skateboards, or just wandering around finding our friends and climbing trees. We got out and did things rather than just reading them or watching them on youtube.

Although I think the internet had been largely good I am very grateful that I grew up in the real world before it came along.

I have never felt the urge to tell the world I just picked my nose, or bought a loaf of bread from the corner shop.

I have voted that I do not think it has improved quality of life. People seem to live their lives vicariously through social media more and more and I find it a shame. Don't get me wrong it is a great way of communicating for marketing and putting your products out there as well as keeping in touch with distant family and friends but I find it takes away the richness of social contact.

People are sharing things to such a degree that no one has anything interesting left to say, furthermore it is easy to bang on a keyboard without thinking of what you are actually saying and/or the impact it may have. People use it in a carefree way and I'm not sure that's so good.

I accept it is useful in some instances but the reliance on it now is a little perverse in my opinion.

I don't consider forums to be the same as it is less personal and can be more private.

The thing that bugs me is the reliance and the constant need to be online and check a status or updated a status or take a picture for Facebook or whatever. Don't get me wrong I have an Instagram account but I use it incidentally and mainly for gym community/coaching. But I personally feel people are slaves to their social media addiction.

I think the amount of time some people spend on it is a worry. I don't like seeing young mums and dads in cafe's ignoring their children and on their phones for example.

No it is clear the vite is for social media rather than the internet then I want to change my vote to a negative.

It's the developments on the internet over the last ten years, which has been dominated by the proliferation of social media.

I suppose it includes the chances to accessibility of information too - like smartphones, which are facilitators in the process.

It's a tool. nothing else, you can let it improve your life and enrich it, or let it control you. I come from a generation where i was in Uni when the World Wide Web was getting big in 1995. So i know both worlds. And with that comes a sense of responsibility with it. I don't spend hours on facebook, twitter etc, in fact i would say these forums are where i spend most of my online time, followed by YouTube.

Which is actually a good example, YouTube has so many informative videos on how to do stuff, you can learn a fair bit from youtube, or you can rot your brain watching PewdeePie
