The Emirates FA Cup 4th Round ** Spoilers ** [27th - 30th January 2023]

So can anyone explain how that goal was offside but the Salah one recently wasn't? Seemed to be very similar.
The officials determined that the touch by the Reading player was a deflection rather than a deliberate action - ie a pass or header.

Which is quite ridiculous. There is absolutely no difference between the header and the defender sticking his leg out to block a pass. The header was to block a pass and the leg stuck out was to block a pass.

They don't even bother to look at the stonewall penalty at half time either.

I think United need to show more composure. Bruno has been at his mercurial worst - he's getting loads of space but not really doing anything. Rashford and Antony are fine but we need more from the midfielders.

They are packing the box and working on the basis that if you stick enough bodies in between the goal and the opposition the ball will probably not get through. Surprisingly effective. If Reading want to get anything from this game though they will need to show some intent.

I can't see them surviving another half like that.

I wrote at the time of the Salah goal that the issue with this law is that officials cannot assume what the intention of the defender was but only judge whether the action was deliberate. The latter is already subjective enough as it is but then expecting the official to determine whether the defender has headed/passed the ball out because they're trying to block the ball or because they're trying to play it to a teammate only creates more confusion and inconsistencies.

The goal today was fairly straightforward. The Reading player hasn't made a controlled action to play that ball, he's simply blocking a pass. The Salah goal is more subjective because the Wolves defender does make a deliberate attempt to head the ball, the question was whether he was in control given that he had to stretch for the ball.
