The Emirates FA Cup 4th Round ** Spoilers ** [27th - 30th January 2023]

The goal today was fairly straightforward. The Reading player hasn't made a controlled action to play that ball, he's simply blocking a pass. The Salah goal is more subjective because the Wolves defender does make a deliberate attempt to head the ball, the question was whether he was in control given that he had to stretch for the ball.

I disagree, hes stuck a leg out to block a pass in exactly the same way the defender in the Salah goal jumps to try and block the ball through to Salah. Both of them were defensive actions to prevent a pass getting to its destination.

I honestly don't have any issue with the decision for the offside, its just another case of very very similar situations resulting in completely different outcomes.

You're assuming re the Salah one which is the issue that I've spoke about. You're almost certainly right but refs cannot assume. The difference is the Wolves player doesn't just stick his head in front of the ball but makes a deliberate action to head the ball. That alone isn't enough to make it onside if the player isn't in control however that's much more of a grey area.

The rule is a mess but unfortunately it's very difficult to change it without causing another issue.
