The England Cricket Thread

Good stuff.

Should England think about going into one-day mode? What's the best they can hope to be at lunch tomorrow? Maybe 220 ahead? Maybe less if Burns sticks around. That's not going to win a test match.

I guess in some ways it kinda is like an ODI

We can't go on with this opening sequence. I reckon Denley and Burns to open, Root in at three and Roy at four. Root can't go back to four as Captain, we just need to expect to lose him. Roy at four means he can play a softer ball or support any total the openers create.

Feel free to correct me here but why are most captains batsmen? Or is that a fact I’ve just totally made up :p

They showed Ashes in the Eighties (or whatever it's called) yesterday when play was stopped and Bob Willis was made captain because of the players dropped who went to South Africa on the Rebel Tour.

Botham said they used to change the field when he walked down for his run up an they showed video of Bob looking confused when he ended his bowling :P

Also bowlers get too knackered (particularly fast ones) at the end of the day, which is why they don't generally pick them.

Pretty shocking from England so far.

Frankly if I was in charge I'd be dropping root as he's clearly **** at test cricket.

I think England need to focus on hanging in there and pushing for a draw now.

Fantastic day of test-match cricket. The middle session was spellbinding.

I suppose England's plan now is to bat as long as possible tomorrow. Well at least until tea - considering play continues until the required number of overs have been bowled. There's no way they can plan to win this game now, but there's plenty of ways they can lose it.

I reckon England will hit 200, and that will be impossible to chase on this pitch.

Yeah 200-220 would be enough to be in with a shout.

Without the finesse of Jimmy A, England are waking up to the idea of properly hostile bowling at long last. I kinda laughed at the "controversy" on some media after Archer hit Smith in the neck. It's almost like everyone forgot the Australian bowling from only a few hours earlier, with entire overs of short balls. It was a great delivery and Smith simply failed to get out of the way. That's cricket, deal with it (and Smith did).

It's a shame we probably won't get to see how Smith copes with Jimmy firing on all cylinders, but Jimmy's fragile and that's cricket too.

Nicely poised match though, very entertaining.

My £20 ticket looks even more lovely now.

Really depends how Jos and Stokesy go in the first half hour; one down and it'll inevitably go pear-shaped. Chasing anything around 200-250 will be hard, depends how quick they try and get there and how ballsy Root would be with a declaration.
