The FA CUP Sixth Round ** Spoilers ** [7th March - 9th February 2015]

A minor miracle? **** me if Moyes had played this football, spent all that money and not have Europe + about four cup games all season it would not be referred to as a minor miracle, would probably feel like a miracle to other fans

so taking the £60m out of it (for one moment) Utd spent about £60m net and about £90m before sales

Chelsea, City have spent at least that recently on much more developed teams than LvG inherited in the summer (even without considering the fact they were also playing a much better game with the players they already had) - admittedly Chelsea lucked in a little with the Luiz sale and so their net spend was only around £10m over the summer and City was about ~£30m

Arsenal spent just under £50m and Liverpool was just under £40m for clubs that were 3 and 5 places above Utd in the final table.

Go back to '13 and Utd only spent £30m (8th highest spend that summer) with Spurs spending nearly £110m , City £90m and Chelsea around £60m

So from a purely spending point of view (which of course doesn't always matter as this season proves) we are hardly even spending enough to keep still from the 7th last season, let alone improving enough to get top 4

Why are we taking £60m out of anything, you've spent £122m net according to that and lots of the reason you did poorly last season was surely down to Moyes?

Frank's discounting £60m of what Utd spent because it's been invisible. I'm not sure if he means £60m worth of players have been **** or not played but either way it's odd rational.

Because Di Maria has been invisible for most of the season - which was the basis of the original comment

As I said above, on such a poor team to start with taking such a huge part of the investment out (whether its because of injury or bad form doesn't matter), when the team wasn't performing to start with - partly due to management and partly due to age etc - and the rest of the top 5 or so are spending the same amount , any improvement at all from the last season is a minor miracle

Just look at how Chelsea have spent every summer since 10/11 - they have paid out on average £100m + EVERY Summer since that one (admittedly making a lot back in the later years) -

so you would therefore expect any investment of any kind to have the same result even if you only did 1/2 the original input?

Yours is a pretty odd rational putting it that way

Oh, well lots of our signings have been invisible for most of the season so we've been performing a major miracle since we lost Suarez and Sturridge has played about 5 games

and a few of your players have turned up this season that didn't last ......(Henderson for one, probably a few others too) - and you were still 2nd last season so its just as hard to judge

What?

I genuinely can't figure out what you're asking.

you seem to be implying that even though 50% of the player investment over the summer didn't turn up / hasn't worked - everyone should still expect the same final result as if that 50% had worked as planned

That would never happen in any kind of investment, whether its money, football or anything else

It may happen occasionally but its rare

I'm not sure what the original point/argument was but if it's to do with judging a manager/clubs performance then you base it on the resources they had available to them not how well they used them. The fact that you're claiming £60m has been invisible says something about how well (or not so well) you spent your money and are getting the best out of your players.

And as Purdy mentioned, all the other clubs you were comparing against ended up not getting the output they expected on certain players too :/

I miss Shamikebab... anyone know where he went?

Alas pre season i said di maria wasn't the right man. Too weak, overpriced poor man's ronaldo.

Turns out he's our most talented player but like mata so fragile that he has little impact for long periods of time. And our incredibad formations don't help.

Still no right back that I've been harping on about for 2 years plus. I mean where is this all going.

A few years on and am I remain unconvinced as to Smalling's capabilities. It seems crazy to me that he gets in England squads, even allowing for the fact that the current crop of eligible CBs is the worst this millenium.
