The Falklands thread

The author is getting slammed in the comments section.

That's because he has twisted several facts to make an impact. For example their was no Argentine Administration on the Falklands, it was a penal settlement that had mutinied and killed their commander (who was in fact acting under the authority of The Republic of Buenos Aires, not Argentina), and the actual administration of the Islands at that time was tentatively under Luis Vernet and that settlement was established under permission from the British Authorities and The United Provinces of the River Plate, (nominally The Republic of Buenous Aires), this was prior to the formation of Argentina as we know it today. The establishment recognised British Claims to the Islands. This settlement continued after the British re-established control of the Islands in 1833, (although it was attacked and vernet left by the United States)..The original claims from the 18th Century, both French and British predate either the Spanish claims or the existence of Argentina or its independent forebears.

The integration of Buenos Aires into Argentina did not happen until 1860, by which time British rule of The Falklands was fully established, and it has been this way ever since. There was never an Argentine claim to the Falklands, they have always attempted to imply that they inherited any such claims from former colonies or Spain, which is somewhat ironic.

The Falklands are British... The Islanders are British... & we as British citizens should be proud of that. We will defend them till the death. If Argentina attacks Falklands it will be a huge mistake on their part.

My only fear how the cuts to the British military & Royal Navy would affect their defence.

Well QE is shaping up nicely, the put her forward island on today

Yes, all Diesel Electric boats can go truly dead in the water, with all machinery stopped. For a certain length of time.

Nuclear boats cannot, they always have to run pumps to cool the reactor.

Its a bit of a one trick pony i guess, but allegedly an Argentine boat was sat on the bottom of San Carlos sound in 1982 and we never could find it.

If it moved it was dead, and it knew it, so it was suppressed i guess but nonetheless it was there and it was a threat had its captain and crew wished to commit suicide after putting a torpedo in something.

I understand nuclear subs need to keep pumps running but surely they are insulated to avoid this ? A V class missile sub relies on stealth to stay undetected so I'd have thought they would have a solution to hide the pump noise.

Reading up on the Seawolf class it seems this can be done but at an eyewatering cost.

No one on this forum will know he answer to that, every bit of equipment which has the potential to transmit noise or vibration to the hull is insulated against this using a series of design measures.

To which level it does or doesn't transmit noise and to what degree it can or can't be located is classified.

topgear could build a fleet of nirtos jags to fly off it :D

or the mod finally gives up on the lightning II's and gets some typhoons converted to work off a carrier.

As much as I hate the F-35, having a diverse fleet i.e. Typhoon and F-35 is a good thing. They are two wildly different animals

The UK have too much money and interest vested in F-35.

I'd love to see a navalised Typhoon though :)

Yep, a possible scenario is the the Argentine boats can remain undetected by our SSN's only by playing possum, whereas ours would be able to remain so while being able to move very carefully.

All theoretical though, the Argentines can't afford to keep them at sea.

the cost of the thing and the way they keep changing the stats of what its supposed to do is beyond a joke. should just convert typhoons and be done with it and make our own next generation carrier based fast jet and to hell with the yanks making a dogs dinner of it.

Navalised Typhoons would incur further huge cost as airframes, undercarriage etc has to be strengthened and folding wings brought in. That's before the cost of redesigning the carriers with cats and traps.

Why the MoD didn't go with cat and trap, the F35c and maybe Super Hornets as a stopgap or to compliment the F35s I'll never know.

Better than Hornets', buy SU-33s. ;)

to be honest though give it 10-15 years and we'l be operating specialized navel drones off them and forgo maned fast jets altogether.

Talk about military hardware all you like, the Argentines now have God on their side....

Super Smashing Great Pope Francis I, played here by Jim Bowen

A billion Catholics believe that Mary didn't die but just 'ascended' to heaven because one of his predecessors woke up one day and decided that must be the case, so what happens when Pope Frank comes out and says "God came to me last night and revealed that the Malvinas, as the Lord called it, should be given to Argentina"?
