The Falklands thread

The main problem most had with that advert is that it contravined the Olympics rules against using the games for political gain.

Stunts like that do little more internationally than show the Argentine government to be rather childish. Remember this is the government that stood up infront of half the UN, press and all, and said they knew where one of our nuclear armed subs was ... with a straight face no less!

I know where one of our Nuclear subs are ;)

I think people had views beyond breaking of the rules for a sporting event. It's a propaganda war, and I don't believe for a second that it's all because of internal strife.

Of course the fact it could down their entire air force within a few minutes probably scared them a little, but the Type 45 is a defensive ship with little offensive capability, no land attack and minimal anti ship. Unless you count the binoculars they would use to watch their ships sink as they try to leave dock.

The Type 45's are now receiving the octuple Harpoon anti-ship missile launchers from the retired Type 22 Frigates, meaning they'll have a decent anti-ship missile punch soon enough, and shortly, Stingray torpedo launchers so that the ships themselves have an anti-submarine capability, as opposed to just relying on their helicopters. There's also plans on the board for them to receive a cruise missile capability, and a new 127mm gun that can fire guided long range munitions when the Type 26 frigates start being delivered.

They should be high end all round fighting ships in a few years time, as opposed to anti-air only focussed ships as they were when delivered.

This is the thing I don't get, if they were inferior as a military force at the onset of the Falklands War why are do you think they wouldn't try again?

The only reason they tried it in the first place was that they were hoping that by taking the islands with a minimum use of force and no casualty's the world would see it as a liberation and the UK would have to go along with public opinion and not attempt to retake them (as Reagan actually requested).

Can we completely rule it out as a possibility? None of us know what is around the corner.

because in 82 we had sod all protecting the islands, now we have a few hundred troops, 4 eurofighters, a type 45 and a few other patrol boats as well as the good possibility of a astute sub sat near by.

the argies now have even less military assets and in all honesty a leader who may very well be bat crap crazy but doesn't have any military background so the generals will probably tell her to stfu if she tried to push for a invasion.

Mr Mujica, a popular president, was elected in 2009. He shunned his grace and favour house and instead lives on a farm on the outskirts of Montevideo with his wife and three-legged dog.

Known as "the poorest president in the world", the former left-wing revolutionary gives 90% of his income to charity.

may be a stunt, but he sounds a well balanced chap

From memory the Type 45's are 'modular' in design so upgrades are easier to perform?

Absolutely. When the Type 45's were designed, and before any steel was cut there was a roadmap laid out for their entry into service. They'd start out as anti-air focussed ships with only minimal anti-submarine and surface warfare equipment, and throughout their first decade of service, would gain new weapons, sensors and systems in three phases.

From what I recall, their combat system is based around Windows, and can be easily adapted, whilst they have provision for an extra gas turbine engine and generating capacity to support more weight etc.

I left the Falkland Islands the week of the referendum, there were 4 Argentinians living on the island and 3 voted in favour of Argentinian rule. Go figure. We partied.

I have never met a more patriotic British contingent in all of my life. I was 12-15 drinks (no draught on the island, you buy cans at the bar) the worse for wear thanks to the locals and american tourists at Deanos when a local decided to put me up for the night, cook me a slap up breakfast, take me for a cheesecake at 10am and drive me for an hour offroad back to MPA. Where in the UK would you get that type of hospitality on a night out?

This happened on numerous occasions, to many an armed forces member. I played in international football tournaments against the Falkland Islands. I played against an Argentinian propaganda rugby outfit in Stanley and made a mockery of their inside/outside half play (thanks to my welsh premiership experience ;) I like to think i spoiled their trip. I don't care if I'm Welsh and half of them where from Patagonia)

Mine and uksoldierboy on this forum's best mate is serving with the No1 Parachute Regiment SFSG in Afghanistan at this moment in time, he is a Falkland Islander. They have so much to teach us about a love of our own heritage and culture and they deserve our support and acknowledgement.

Malvinas - aka Melvins Islands. Named by the Argentinians themselves after the Welsh druid who settled them. Again go figure the political rhetoric everyone spouts, including that nonce sean penn (no capitals in his name as he's not worth it).

The American tourists I've personally spoken to in Stanley and walked around various penguin settlements have spoken about the abuse they've received on docking in Argentina. The 'Penguin News' often reports on Argentine aggression around the islands, the UK forces are regularly playing off against Argentinian aggression in our territorial waters. Falklands fishing vessels get hassled by Argentinian vessels weekly (even if their flagship sinks in port due to disrepair), they still show a force. Fishing in the south atlantic seas is a billion pounds per year industry! Forget the non existant oil! Fish is the life blood of the falkland islands at present.

**** me, Deanos bar sells Whale and chips for a fiver! And Australian and Chilean expats work the bar with British flags all around you! That's British!!!

That's an opinion of this armed forces member, who's family have served in the Falklands, his friends and his friends families.

Long may the Islanders live in peace. They put us to shame in every way.

Oh and they all wear Welsh rugby jerseys. Sorry guys but it's a fact.

...they farm sheep. Sheep that get eaten by 1.8metre long turkey vultures. It's a mans world. A baron Welsh land down under where men are men, sheep tremble and peat fires burn so ferociously they can be seen from space.

Reading the above post about fishing around the Atlantic; I sold a watch to someone from the Falklands. His family business was squid fishing, and he was absolutely loaded by the sounds of it. Certainly a lot of money in the fishing industry out there.

Are you sure about that? I thought the Argentinian name was the Spanish name, which was a Spanish version of the French name given by the captain of the first people to settle on one of the islands and named after the port they left from - St Malo. Iles Malouines --> Islas Malvinas.

Not on the website yet but just heard on the BBC new channel that Cristina Fernández de Kirchner has once again renewed Argentina's claim to the Falklands. I did wonder how long it would take before they would try again given the action Spain has been taking. I wonder if the claim to the UN will be anything new....
