The Falklands thread

Although it pains me to admit it, the French may have actually been our closest allie. They immediately stopped missile sales and arranged for a shipment about to be delivered to Peru to go around the Atlantic in circles to delay the delivery until after the war. French aircraft helped sea harriers train and mock Exocet attacked British warships to get them ready for the battle in the south Atlantic.

Although America did greatly help us, they took there sweet time in declaring there public support. I can't help but think if they'd backed us fully from the outset then war might have been avoided. France on the other hand helped us fully publicly and militarily like an allie should from the very start.

If you're British and want a bad guy to blame then look at Israel (*in no way connected to all that Zionist rubbish from earlier*) who did there very best to help Argentina - I don't know why, you'd think they would have backed us with Argentina's history of aiding Nazi's.

I had originally heard that those nasty French had been helping sink our ships and researched for more of there evil doings but the truth was just the opposite, the more I looked the more I found that the French were very good to us.
With that in mind, I wonder if the French would support us if South America did attack the islands. We're supposedly in this military pact with them these days, aren't we? And having the Charles De Gaulle fighting alongside us certainly wouldn't hurt. :p

I think we'd rather give the western island over to the French in return for military support, if we needed to. Than give it to the Argies.

Funny that most of these ruling Argies are descended from European colonisers but they want the European colonisers out of the Falklands even though they have no ancestral or geographics claim to them. The Falklands are have been inhabitated by Brits for centuries and they people wish to remian British.

The glaring fact I see missing from US MSM reports is that the islanders ARE and WANT to be British.

You're not half as clever as you think you are. You're probably thought the Iraq War was fought over oil when Western oil companies got almost no contracts in post-war Iraq and the Western people got deeper into debt funding an absurd war which could never be won. It's not like an invading force goes into the ME and takes possession of the oil. 'Oil' is part of the allowed counter-thought to stop people questioning what are really Zionist wars. Think for yourself.

If our navy gets dragged into the Zionist war in Iran, Argies might strike then and we will be unable to stop them.

BTW, our navy once used to rule the world - now it is a 4th rate power which might now be able to protect the Falklands for much longer. We cut our navy since we bailed out criminal bankster parasites and this was done without opposition from the masses who are controlled by the media.

Calm down, we've one ship that could destroy the entire Argies airforce at the press of one button, before they could get within 200miles of being able to target it.

hmmmm sweet oil...

Chavez is sooo ronery. He needs some little attention. And BAE needs to step it up. Come on, build some more destroyers already!

Oh wait, is that the Daily Mail? Nevermind... :'(

A bit of Falklands history.

After 41 years service the SS Great Britain was retired to the Falkland Islands in 1884 to be used as a floating warehouse before being scuttled in 1937.

Anyway from what I can make out:
- 1764 = French founded West Falklands
- 1765 = British founded East Falklands
- 1767 = Spain acquired the French colony
- 1770 = Spain attacked Port Egmont (British) but war was avoided with a peace treaty
- 1774 = due to the American Revolutionary War, Great Britain withdrew from overseas settlements but left behind a plaque asserting claim of the island.
- 1806 = Spain leaves the island but also leave a plaque asserting Spanish claim
- 1820 = Storm damage forced an Argentinian Frigate to take shelter and claimed the islands (the captain of the ship was American  )
- 1828 = A German named Luis Vernet established a settlement after seeking authorisation from both British and Argentine authorities
- 1831 = US warship USS Lexington raided the Falklands after a dispute over fishing and hunting rights.
The Americans destroyed the settlement and the Islands were declared free from all government after the senior members of the settlement were arrested for piracy.
- 1832 = Argentina sent Commander Mestivier to find settlement, but he was killed in a mutiny after 4 days :p
- 1833 = British forces returned and requested the Argentine garrison to leave the islands, after a brief protest they later complied meanwhile Luis Vernet's (the German) settlement continued under British rule
- 1834 = The islands were governed as a naval station
- 1840 = British Government establishes the Falkland Islands as a permanent colony

Not surprising the Americans are the ones to blame for this mess.

It would be the logical answer.

But we will never give up the Falklands, we have too many British Nationals over there. It would be a massive, massive kick in the teeth to our history and the people who live there.

We would lose a lot of face over it.

Looks like my short straw will be coming soon for the Falklands, its such a dump too :(

This talk of one ship to destroy the airforce is technically possible but probably inaccurate. I'd imagine it would run out of ammo/missiles before the argentine airforce runs out of planes...

Unless they plan on flying the planes into our ships, we'll be fine. :p

It probably would yes, which is also the reason why the 4 Typhoons stationed there couldn't shoot down the whole Argentinian airforce, technically they are perfectly capable, but they can't carry enough ammo to do that (I think the T45 can, but it 'probably' isn't). They 'might' get chance to rearm once before enemy ground attack aircraft were on top of them and a Typhoon isn't hard to destroy on the ground, even for a rusty old Skyhawk or Puccara.

However, and this is the big one really, you don't need to destroy the entire enemy airforce, they aren't going to send it at you and leave their own country without any military aircraft left ...also the cost in lives and equipment would be sufficiently high that a battle of attrition really wouldn't happen, not over the Falkland islands, that's the sort of battle you fight when someone is trying to invade your home directly, not over a minor territorial dispute remote from your home.

It's certainly interesting to consider scenarios and such, but in reality I really, really don't think anything will happen again. The Argentine government isn't that stupid, neither is the military, further consequences would be that they would find themselves politically isolated in the world anyway, they may have a few friends in South America that stick by them but that's wouldn't help much. Brazil is growing fast and is much more interested in it's own economic interests than Argentina's territorial claims. Same is perhaps even more true of Chili ...added to the fact that they have traditionally been pro British anyway, they wouldn't support them if push came to shove and no one cares about the rest of them anyway, Paraguay, Uruguay, Venezuela, pfff.

Indeed, once you've shot several down they will back off, this has been proven time and time again, particularly in the naval battle world, sink a few ships and the rest usually refuse to come out of port, particually if you haven't got much of a navy in the firstplace.

Personally i think the Type 45 will have a full complement of Aster 15's and 30's, it's my understanding that they get loaded into the ship in large missile blocks, so you might aswell fill the lot.

I see Prince Harry is now qualified to fly Apaches in combat. Given the way they have reacted to Prince William flying SAR missions in an unarmed Sea King, imagine the furore if we deployed Prince Harry and some Apaches to the islands.

Wow.

Suddenly the pantomime theatricals played out by Kirchner the other night make complete sense.

They're limiting their citizens to spending no more than 230 dollars per day. So basically if you want to buy a new PC, you can't! You'd need to but one or two components per day and then build it at the end of the week.

I guess that's one way of controlling massive inflation.

I doubt they would deploy Apaches there, they would only be of much use if we wanted to retake the islands rather than simply defend them. They are used for busting armoured vehicles and attacking fortified enemy positions, bunkers, gun emplacements and general close support ground attack work. So they would be running off HMS Ocean most likely, you could also run them off Bulwark and Albion I imagine. They aren't defensive weapons, they are offensive.

Argentina are in more of a mess than i first thought, with these sort of problems at home she might be looking for another fight (regardless of how stupid) to stop everyone thinking about what total and utter dispaire the country is in.

It's comical that she batters Britain as a broken country with huge issues, whatever, they have no idea.

What sort of news restrictions do Argentina place on the people, do they limit access to internet sites? Tbh at the moment it's sounding rather like a mini North Korea.

Basically they are trying desperately to restrict the flow of money going out of Argentina, with a purpose of trying to limit inflation and strengthen their own currency. Argentina is no stranger to bankruptcy though, they actually went insolvent in 2001, I think it was 2001 anyway, I forget now.
