The Falklands thread

Thing is it is pretty simple.

* Falklands claimed by Britain before Argentina existed
* Falklands are not off the coast of Argentina, they aren't off the coast of anywhere it just so happens Argentina is the closest nation as the crow flies but even so you couldn't swim from one to the other.
* Falkland inhabitants voted overwhelmingly to remain British.

It's pretty much case closed after that. Britain have history and democracy on their side. Argentina's only accurate argument is that it's closer to them than it is to Britain which given numerous other examples (Alaska, St Helena, Channel islands etc etc etc) is a ridiculous argument.

In fact the closest part of Argentina (and the province to which Argentina claims the Falklands belong) only became part of Argentina in the 1880's after Argentina invaded and committed genocide on the native inhabitants.

As a fighter it supposedly outperforms the Hornet in many areas. It looks the business too.

Russian jets are very underrated, when the Su-27 first hit the scene the air superiority version outclassed the F15 and the naval variant made the F14 look like a joke, the Mig-29 had similar advantages over the F16. The reason Russian planes have developed such a terrible reputation/record for reliability and combat is because the only times Russian/American hardware ever clashes its always well maintained and usually up to date American jets pwning dilapidated and outdated soviet hardware. That and the collapse of the USSR and resulting financial crisis left Russia stalled in its aircraft development for some time but its now coming back on track at quite a rate.

It's not about oil so much as national pride...

A war/battle/skirmish was fought/waged and won to keep the Islands British. To then have them taken away by the consistently moaning Argentine government is just not an option.

Buying Hornets or SU-33's for the sake of a few years or less?

Its not even about national pride, it is about the wishes of the people who live there. They have an inalienable right to self determination and despite our own mistakes in the past regarding peoples rights, it is really as simple as that and the sooner the Argentine (and others) stop using them as a political populist punching bag to stay in power the better. The reason we are having a referendum in Scotland is because of this inalienable right.

Isn't the Russian navy phasing out it's SU-33 fleet in favour of a navalised MiG 29 ?

Are you sure it isn't by the grace of Westminster and its supreme Parliamentary Sovereignty, Castiel?

I'm sure that was the tune originally?

All those threats of revocation of Scottish home rule, where was the inalienable right to self determination then?

That's the thing that sticks in the craw with me, playing it when it suits and both you and the British state are experts at it. ;) :p

Russian aircraft are very good in some areas and cheap to buy but its worth noting that they have more then a reputation of being not entirely durable and the engines have a very very short service life.

But as pretty much none of them could take off from the CVF it doesn't matter much anyway and the RAF wont be interested as the Typhoon has the land launched area very well covered.

I have nothing to do with either the British position or the Falklands. You just have to express your hatred of Britain whenever you can, you might like to know that the governments position on the Islanders right to self determinination has been the same since before the 1960s and this is what has blocked any transfer of soveriegnty even when it was actually considered before 1982, also every time the British Government offered to allow the International Court of Justice to mediate the dispute, Argentina refused. Since the UN resolution of 1964 the UK (and the UN) have always maintained that the interests of the Islanders is paramount. So you are way off point, unless you think its only the Scots that have a right to self determination?
