The Fall of Bioware......

It's a trend though, that when EA get involved, things go downhill.

because it exposes devs to the major mass market section.

They don't need to make cheaper niche games, they have huge funding and advertising but it also means the game as to be more "broad" in it's appeal in order to make more money.

when your devs are saying

and the worst part of making games is having to play them you know your deep rpg game reputation is dead.

I don't think anyone complained about the combat in BG. It was great. +But+ BioWare didn't invent that - TSR did, by inventing the DnD ruleset. BioWare fleshed out a great game, no doubt, but they didn't have to reinvent the wheel by making their own combat system.

Their first attempt to do so - DA:O - did not have satisfying combat at all. I can understand wanting to skip it, becuase in fact it was pretty dire. And most of the time, the definition of success was basically whether you'd been able to program your AI companions not to act like 'tards when you weren't directly controlling them. Awful.

No, I'm afraid I didn't get anything from DA:O's combat system approaching the fun I had in BG/BG2 with the DnD combat system.

ME had more depth than ME2, ME2 was more action focused.

Imo.

True, but i didn't really think that was such a bad thing tbh. I thought it worked fine. It would have been nice to have more depth to the RPG elements in ME2 but it wasn't that big a deal for me as they were hardly that deep to begin with really.

I'm sorry but i disagree with this. I much preferred the combat in DAO to the BG games. OK, It was hardly the most fluent but i thought it was definitely better than BG. As i said in a thread the other day, they were really great and i loved them, but we have moved on from the old isometric D+D games now.

DnD had (has?) complexity and depth. If you check my posts that's what I want from games.

It is not possible to argue that DA:O had more complexity or depth of (in combat mechanics) than BG/BG2. It simply doesn't. That's not to say you can't like it more, of course ;)

But obviously we want different things from our games.

Maybe it's just me being frustrated at my curernt playthrough of BG which i started a few months back with the BG2 engine. I'm playing as a mage for the first time and i must have died about 50 times!(in around 15 hours gametime) enemies only have to look at me and i'm dead lol.

I wouldn't even bother taking the time to pirate DA2 let alone pay for it. Be interested to watch a "Lets play" of it on youtube just to see someone rip it to pieces haha.

Bioware lost it long ago. DA3 will only sell well if it gets good reviews so I wouldn't be shocked if IGN/gamespot reviews etc are plastered all over the interwebz with their paid for reviews.

If they've spent all this time and effort on getting the gay romance plots and unique lovemaking scenes in a frigging action RPG, and it's STILL not got the depth of the original Mass Effect, then I am going to be mightily narked off.

I loathe the way that Bioware are pandering to the illiterate masses and churning out dross that I just would not expect from a company who obviously have the talent and vision to make games that break the monotony that plagues the game industry at the moment.

Oh yeah. EA suck nards.

Another game series ruined by EA.

I enjoyed ME2 more than ME. ME was good, the extra level of customisation was good too but ME2 just seemed to be a better story, hung together better and was a much better game from a combat point of view.

Bioware's future probably hinges on one game and one game only, if SWTOR is a success then Bioware will be fine (for a while at least) regardless of it's other games.

Playing Bioware games for many years, I hoped DA2 was only a blip in their history and not the start of a trend.

It really was rage inducing how bad that game was compared to its predecessor and Biowares back catalogue of largely quality RPG titles.

SWTOR looks terrible, i just hope they don't ruin ME3 as well.

Well i've heard it all now.
I did not think anything would stop me from buying ME3.

Bioware's reputation had just plummeted imo.

Like others said, Bioware used to be an auto buy for me, not anymore. Still haven't touched MS2,DA2 yet.

Didn't some of the long term Bioware developers start to depart over last few years?, I remember reading some did, kinda get the feeling their jumping ship as it isn't the same company anymore.

It is kind of sad seeing the best of 2011 not even compare to what I consider the golden age of gaming. Its all about making a quick buck and not actually being creative. Games like planescape torment and Outcast (my fave pc game of all time) etc that just reeked pure gameplay and actually pushed boundaries and made me go WOWWWWW!!!!!!!!!

The last game to make me go WOW or anything near was Dragon age: origins. There was a buttload of story and gameplay in it but about 3/4 through I kind of lost the motivation to complete it.

We need more games pushing boundaries!

I will NEVER forget the first time I activated the first gate in outcast back in 1999. My jaw hit the floor. That game pushed graphics at the time beyond what a lot of pc's could comprehend. And it actually had an amazing story and good gameplay.

It is shame to see how much they have gone downhill - the takeover by EA has not helped matters.
And how much is that? Other than DA2 Bioware haven't really put a foot wrong, and to say their more recent games like DA:O and ME2 are weaker than past efforts like Baldurs Gate 2 / KOTOR is only really an opinion rather than a fact.

One bad game and everybody thinks they're on an inescapable downfall.
