The Fashion Thread... personal tastes, musings, and recommendations

I like brogues and boots. This isn't all of them. I think I might get some red wing boots next as I've heard good things. These are mostly Church's, Cheaney and Loake. The grey pair are Margela and very umcomfortable!

Excuse the potty.

As someone with big 'ole beefy thighs I'm just glad "Loose fit" jeans seem to have made somewhat of a comeback. Now if we could just get these companies to ditch the horrible feeling "Elastane" material for 100% denim I'd finally be happy with my jeans again after 20 years of misery!

Talk to me about cedar shoe trees.

My gut instinct is I see ones on eBay for £20-25 (sometimes less with multi-buy) and assume they are exactly the same as the more expensive ones on the manufactures sites, just with no branding. Is there really any difference? I’ve seen some people say oh the springs are better yada yada but the cynic in me just thinks companies buy the same Chinese stuff in bulk then slap their name on it and sell it for a mark up.

I bought the Lagn & Messer ones from Amazon https://www.amazon.co.uk/Langer-Messmer-Gentlemen-Including-Shoehorn/dp/B00DSJ0GWC/ref=sr_1_9?crid=952BFV6PKYYQ&keywords=shoe+trees+lang&qid=1667360680&qu=eyJxc2MiOiIyLjI1IiwicXNhIjoiMC4wMCIsInFzcCI6IjAuMDAifQ==&sprefix=shoe+trees+lang,aps,71&sr=8-9

I know what you mean about the 100% denim. This week I found two pairs of unworn 100% denim Levi's 501's that I bought about 10+ years ago. I recall getting them at a great price but not wearing them as I couldn't get on with the straight legs at a time when everything was slim and skinny. I've put on a bit of weight since then but am on the way down now and think I should be able to wear them again in a month or two. The legs now don't seem so oversized in today's more relaxed fit and they feel wonderfully sturdy compared to the stretchy slim jeans I've been wearing.

Apologies. I'm new to this thread and haven't read all of it.

I'm desperately looking to improve my dress sense. I'm a 38M and don't have massive amounts of money for real designer stuff but I would like to be able to dress smartly as well as "smart casual". I guess I could probably spend £150 to £200 per outfit assuming they use the same shoes. Any hints on where to look or what I should be looking for?

Have a look at Uniqlo, reasonably priced and good for smart casual. It's kind of vanilla clothing but pretty timeless, easy to mix and match stuff.

Wish we had a shoe thread like this.

Throwing it out there to save me returns... When Herring and A Fine Pair of Shoes state xyz model (from Herring and Berwick in this case) fits TTS, is that an accurate claim from those that have purchased goodyear welted footwear from either? I know it can be last dependent but equally I usually see anything welted come with the proviso to go down half a size.

A year later…

Everything either sale or seconds which has saved me quite a lot. Loafers are both Berwick / A Finer Pair of Shoes, the black oxfords are Loake Aldwychs and the brown oxfords are Herring Mayfairs which are the same last, so the former were probably made by the latter too.

I used to get the odd thing from them but over the last few years their stuff has been uninspiring so I never even shopped the sales, not surprising they went under. Finding it hard to get inspired by anything from anything on the high street now - most of the stuff I’ve bought recently was in the Mr. Porter sale or used on Vinted!

A lot of their stuff went extremely garish over the last 10 years. Can I just have a normal shirt please?

Agreed. It's a shame because I felt TB's general quality was a cut above many other brands and their prices weren't too bad. However for much their none garish items, I couldn't always get the right fit for my body shape (tall & slim).

I'd like to think someone could purchase the brand, bring it back with a less polarising approach and turn it around. Hopefully the likes of Mike Ashley and SportsDirect steer well clear.

That’s a real shame. They did some fantastic pieces in their time. I wonder how they managed to fail business wise so badly.
They tried to expand into Europe or something by doing some sort of tie up with another company and it blew up in their faces. Sounded like complete mismanagement by Ted Baker and they didn’t know what they signing up to.

The bit about about AARC earlier this year.

PS ‘proper quality’? I mean it’s fine and all, it’s still made in far off lands. I don’t see much tangible difference in quality compared to TB or Hugo Boss etc. Better fashion, that’s a different story.

PS is miles ahead of TB and Hugo Boss.

I’m aware of Ted Bakers slip, hence me saying “in their time”.
What time exactly? I am going back 10 years at least.
