This is drawing on from the "queues outside Hollister" thread here http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?t=18222894&highlight=hollister, I was going to put this in there then thought id make a new thread where we can all muse and talk about our personal tastes in a more dedicated fashion.

Ok, so here's my tuppence from a man who has definitely grown and changed in tastes over the years.

When you hit 25-30, and presuming your fashion isn't dictated to you by your social circle (wot u wearin u puff lol!), you should then (again, just giving a person opinion) be looking at buying good quality, long-lasting items that fit the "timeless fashion" label... i'm talking things like fine, high quality merino wool v-neck jumpers (don't get Cashmere, its a nightmare to maintain), worn with a shirt or t-shirt underneath. For shirts, they should all be as slim as possible and perfectly fitting (and I cant stress that enough) and in a core selection of colours that flatter you... no outlandish designs or colours that you will regret 6 months later, and each item should be able to mix and match with the majority of your wardrobe. It should be a progressive collection of complimentary items that don't need to be thrown out until they wear out.

Some of my personally reccommended items (non exorbitantly priced too, I do buy high-end stuff but that is very personal with regards to taste and styling, this thread is dealing with more "general" things) for a very flattering look are:

----------------------------

Knitwear:

Jasper Conran Merino Wool jumpers http://www.debenhams.com/webapp/wcs...uctsuniverse_18664}&ps=default&sid=*min_price

They are very fine material, very slim fitting, have no crappy logos, and look great with a t-shirt or shirt underneath. Debenhams keep having sales on them, so I advise picking up Black, Navy, Charcoal, and one other colour eg: Green that goes well with with the other core colours.

All Saints: Knitwear http://www.allsaints.com/men/knitwear/

This brand really have produce some awesome stuff in the last years and have a distinctive look while remaining very cool. Expensive, but always good quality, and worth the money for the most part.

Other good brands that look smart and wear well and last are Tommy Hilfiger, Polo Ralp Lauren, and some Firetrap knitwear (for thicker stuff) etc.

ASOS: Knitwear http://www.asos.com/search/wool-jumper?q=wool+jumper&pgesize=204&sort=priceasc

ASOS, as usual, tons of choice.

----------------------------

Jeans:

Levi's - There's a reason these are so popular, they make jeans that fit very well and last ages, mostly with zip flies too http://www.levi.com/GB/en_GB/category/men/jeans

Choose the style that takes your fancy, go and try it on somewhere, then order as cheap as possible online. Job done.

Nudie jeans are also good with some quirkier styles in there among the staples http://www.nudiejeans.com/shop/jeans/s/1

ASOS can't be beat for those on more of a budget (they have high-end stuff too of course) and they sell many brands in addition to their decent own brand http://www.asos.com/Men/Jeans/Cat/pgecategory.aspx?cid=4208#parentID=-1&pge=0&pgeSize=204&sort=3

----------------------------

Shirts:

Debenhams have some good shirts from the following brands:

  • St. George by Duffer
  • Jeff Banks/Jeff Banks Stvdio
  • Jasper Conran

Very fine materials, last ages, and perfect for business wear. In the sales you can pick up some bargains.

NEXT - Their tailored (suited to work) and slim-fitting (suited to casual) shirts are well styled, fit very well, and last ages. http://www.next.co.uk/men/shirts

Do not fear T.K.Maxx, because that jumble sale of a store happens to have some of the best bargains available for those willing to brave the chaos. Bargains (pure cotton only, don't buy anything polyester) to be picked up from there are such as Calvin Klein slim-fitting shirts for £29 - bargain.

----------------------------

T-Shirts and Polos:

For T-shirts:

ASOS: Huge selection, something for everyone http://www.asos.com/Men/T-Shirts/Cat/pgecategory.aspx?cid=7616#parentID=-1&pge=0&pgeSize=204&sort=3

For Summer jack and Jones do some cool prints, are 100% cotton, and generally fit very well. for Winter I wear plainer grey and white tees with a blazer.

For Polo shirts:

ASOS again has a huge selection: http://www.asos.com/Men/Polo-Shirts...oduct|v2#parentID=-1&pge=0&pgeSize=204&sort=3

NEXT polos are also decent if on more of a budget http://www.next.co.uk/men/t-shirts-tops

My personal favourite brands for polos are:

Tommy Hilfiger (sim fit)
Ralph Lauren (slim fit)

They look good and last ages.

----------------------------

Shoes:

  • Melvin and Hamilton footwear - My new favourite for formal and smart casual shoes, the quality is awesome and I have pairs that I have had for 8 months and they still look great http://www.melvin-hamilton.com/shoes/men.html
  • Tommy Hilfiger footwear - A bit pricier in general, but VERY high quality shoes that last for ages. I have a pair of leather casual loafers which go with everything I have, and have worn amazingly well.
  • Ted Baker - Mid-priced and also last a good while, classic styling and good quality shoes.
  • ASOS own brand - Low priced and some of the formal shoes ive had off of them for £20 have lasted ages and still look great with regular polishing and shining. They have tons of other brands too of course http://www.asos.com/men/shoes-boots-trainers/cat/pgecategory.aspx?cid=4209&via=top

----------------------------

Suits:

Higher end:

A Suit That Fits - http://www.asuitthatfits.com/shop/index.php

The place to get a custom tailored, bespoke suit that fits like a glove for a reasonable price, in just about any quality you want ranging from good, to luxury. I can't reccommend them enough, and the benefit is you get to design your own suit and make it as individual as possible compared to any on the rails option.

Budget:

NEXT do a decent range of suits i nall fits, colours and materials: http://www.next.co.uk/men/tailoring

I have had a few suits from them and for the money they are good value and fit very well.

Debenhams have a decent range of slim fit mix and match wool suits, with some good prices in the sales:

  • Jeff Banks Stvdio
  • Ben Sherman
  • Jasper Conran

All three brands fit me very well and actually have a relatively tailored look... for the money (theyre always in the sales) you cant beat them imo, and they look much better than some of the dross you get from Moss Bros et al.

----------------------------

Blazers:

Blazers are imo an essential item in a wardrobe for smart and casual occasions, mix them with a sharp white or black shirt, and you will look awesome.

I have bought some amazing pure British wool blazers from ASOS.com that fit like a glove, very sharp, and are very reasonably prices for the quality http://www.asos.com/search/wool-bla...ine=floor:floor_1001&currentpricerange=45-285

I now have a few form there that look amazing in almost any smart casual situation when combined with decent shoes and a short or tshirt. Take your time though and anything that doesnt fit perfectly, return it.

----------------------------

Coats & Jackets

ASOS also have a cracking selection of jackets and coats very good prices, especially for pure wool stuff http://www.asos.com/men/jackets-coa...oduct|v2#parentID=-1&pge=0&pgeSize=204&sort=3

All Saints: http://www.allsaints.com/men/coats/style,any/colour,any/size,any/

All Saints really have produced some awesome stuff in the last years and have a distinctive look while remaining very cool. Expensive, but always good quality materials, and worth the money for the most part.

G-star do also make the odd gem. I have a G-star Wool garber Trench as seen here http://www.xileclothing.com/product...DECOY_WOOL_GARBER_TRENCH_6081_4002_0_0_1.html which looks awesome... great fitting and styling, and can be worn in any situation due to the discreet logos, even to work.

----------------------------

Those are just my personal musings, reflect my own opinion, and im not telling anyone how to dress... merely sharing some tips thatwork for me. Obviously here are a ton more brands I either don't know of or haven't mentioned (I didn't have all day to write the thread), so if you know of any others then say so.

So, how do you dress and do you have any tips of your own to share? Feel free to reccommend your own, rubbish mine, or suggest alternatives and additions. Maybe some of us will find it useful. :)

Good idea for a thread. :)

Sorry, can't agree with this at all. :o :p
Try www.kurtgeiger.com (men's section, obviously) for a much higher quality selection of fashionable shoes.

In terms of general clothing - I'm a big fan of H&M and Uniqlo for casual stuff. Zara is nice for jackets and slightly more dress-up.

Thats exactly what im talking about... offering your own opiions, cheers. :)

So someone goes from 25 to 26 and you think they should drop the decent fashion brands and head into some woolly jumper and shirt combination?

As usual Morba your reading skills seem about as sub-par as things get. I stated multiple times that it was only my personal tastes and reccommendations on what works for me, I don't think anyone "should" do anything, hence a thread for ideas and opinions. Do keep up old chap. :)

It sounds to me that you dress like Jeremy Clarkson but you're only in your late 20's?

Do you wear shoes with jeans as well?

My social group is generally 23-35 and all well dressed too, and we all do reasonably well for the ladies, so if I looked like a granddad I think id of heard about it by now. However if its not your usual type of dress than I can see how you can jump to that conclusion. :)

Well I liked the thread and along with some of the other posters it has given me something to think about in regards to spending more wisely especially.

You're welcome old chap, that was the only intention of the thread form the get-go. You have to expect the usual OCUK flaming, it just wouldn't be OCUK otherwise. :D

You don't need to spend hundreds and hundreds of pounds to be in fashion. All it takes is a small bit of research (just look around and see what people wear when you walk down the high street) and perhaps browsing a few magazines. The trick is to buy a few "basics" and adjust your wardrobe accordingly.

http://www.fashionbeans.com/feature...–-part-15-–-the-other-6-items-you-should-own/

The above is a very good read. For example, a white t-shirt doesn't go out of fashion but the neckline and fit will always need to be slightly different depending on what you will be wearing. If you want to wear a neckchain, i personally prefer a more distressed looking t-shirt but if i am wearing a hoodie over the top (with the hoodie mostly done up), i don't need anything special and a normal crew cut would be fine. It's just common sense.

After a while i have become fussier about the brands i wear, to the point where i won't buy certain brands because of the way the logo looks or just the name. :o I wouldn't wear Jack & Jones, Fenchurch, Carhartt, G-Star, FCUK or Ringspun for example...just not to my taste as a brand.

Spot on, and largely echoes my own thoughts and research. :)

hehe well I am 23, 5'7 (so shorter than average) and 33" waist (could be slimmer, too much working away eating in hotels is not good for me :p) so I will be avoiding the slim fit jumper :(

By the time I have lost some weight the slim fit wardrobe is what I will be aiming for

Don't be afraid to go with slim fit jumpers and shirts... they will still be flattering and make you look slimmer, and will continue to be wearable as you lose weight. Just make sure theyre not skin tight and you'll be fine. :)

Think so, I look for 100% cotton whenever I buy shirts, jeans or jumpers. Cashmere is a bit expensive, even in GAP lol

I did get a Superdry wool trench pea coat in the sale for £110 that I am chuff with.

Cashmere is a nightmare to maintain, I never recommend buying it personally... Merino feels almost as soft and wears much, much better. plus it is a very efficient material that even when thin can keep you warm and dry due to its high wicking properties.

From what I saw at TK Maxx there were two types of Refectory knitwear ranges... the Merino (buy buy buy as many nice colours as you can find in your size)... and the Cotton/polyester mix (not as good). Both were labelled clearly on the purple labels ("Merino" was merino, and "luxury" was cotton), so differentiating them isnt a chore. :)

Asos have got some Merino jumpers on offer at the moment too.

Ooh didnt see that, thanks!

OP has the worst dress sense known to mankind - do you live in Debenhams & House Of Fraser??

for "timeless fashion" i think you need to be looking towards classic Fred Perry, higher end Ben Sherman, Baracuta, Aertex, John Smedley, Paul Smith et al

none of this "Jasper Conran" rubbish - do you buy Jeff Banks stuff too??

*yawns*

The point, was not that I live in Debenhams, or that I dont buy higher-end stuff (as I said in the OP) but that I am providing examples of readily available, cost-effective clothes that go together to create (again, purely imo) a good look that doesn't go out of fashion very easily. Try and read the OP in more detail

Higher end Ben Sherman being timeless fashion?

it did make me chuckle too. :D

Ben Sherman :/

Although agree about Jasper Conran, ew.

What is bad about Jasper Conran in terms of the jumpers I posted, or his very good quality business shirts? They are plain jumpers, no logo is apparent, you cant tell whose brand they are... they are just good quality and nice fitting. That's the point of posting them. :)
can always make it more if you want
EDIT - LOL at recieving a warning for calling someone a twonk, its about the mildest, most innocuous insult ive seen in months here. Most amusing. - rules are rules - in fact technically personal insults result is a suspension

I think my "ew" was a little harsh!

I find the brand far too old for me. I think it might be because i don't need to wear a suit/shirt/tie to work. My age is also a factor (22) and so although i can appreciate Jasper, i won't be buying it.

Discussion! \o/

Ahhh ok no worries that makes sense heh. They are great jumpers though, so if you do need one that is plain and elegant, you could do worse (ignoring the name of the label). :)

In my opinion TK Maxx is a terrible shop. The only reason that there are some designer clothes in there is due to that the brands responsible for making said clothes couldnt shift them in there own shop..

I've been in there very occassionally because of being with someone who likes it but the clothes awful and its a bloody mess.. They are left over clothes for a reason.

I reckon people just buy designer clothes in there to say look what i've got for this price.. its at that price because its ****. I'd rather go to burtons or river island than shop in that hell hole. Or if you save up get some nice clothes from some nice shops ;)

You're wrong, you can grab some gems there. It's 98% ****, 2% win.

Quite drab imo, nothing different or special about what you've shown us.

I'm saying because most of the stuff you've shown us, and therefore give us a sense of your style, is what most people dress like anyway and I don't really think it's worth posting.

I respect your opinion, but you haven't understood the point of the post and clothes choices. They are meant to be more refined and elegant, therefore not "omgfancy" in styling. Hardly 'drab' though if you do it right.

Excellent timing Richdog,
I've just decided to start dressing my age but then realised I really don't have a clue where to start.

Thanks, and the same to other people posting their ideas, it's been very helpful :)

You're welcome dude, and you'll be amazed how much more confident you feel when you settle on a more refined look, and find threads that you known you look consistently good in. Other people do respond to it.

Richdog - I just checked the label on my Reflectory Jumper, its 100% Wool !!!

Score!!!! No wonder it is so warm!

Good man, now go buy as many as you can find before they run out. :D

Slim straight != skinny Morba. Maybe not for you, admittedly but they fit 99% of the population without being tight :p

Yup, skinny jeans are epic emo lose. Slim, straight jeans look great if you can pull them off without them looking tight, if they look too tight then don't wear them..

Just picked up two refectory merino wool jumpers for the pricely sum of £17 each, they are very nice indeed.

Very fine quality aren't they. I wish I could find a website or place that sells their stuff, but Googles so far have been fruitless... i've no idea where they sell their stuff normally. It's surprising given quality is as good as any major mainstream label.

Love how the OP claims that it's just his opinion on what he thinks looks good, pretends to be indifferent and tolerant of other fashions... and then calls skinny jeans "emo lose".

Way to judge. How would you react if I did it to you?

"Blazers are preppy lose"

Have fun.

Oh yes, because of course I can't have a jokingly embellished opinion on anything can I? Loosen up with the nerd-rage, it ain't healthy. :D

Feel free to call blazers preppy lose or criticise any of my choices all you want, all I care about is that im comfortable wearing them, I don't care a jot about anything else. :)

I thought this thread was for the lols at first, wool jumpers, crappy shoes and "timeless numbers". I'm 29 and wouldn't be seen dead in half the stuff mentioned in the op.

And conversely, I probably wouldn't be seen dead in the stuff you wear. Horses for courses. :D

Good for you, I'm 24 and mostly wear that stuff. And guess what? It looks good...

OP thanks for this thread, couldn't get anything from TK Maxx but did pick up a couple of merino wool jumpers from House of Frazer.

;)

http://www.jackwills.com/Store/ProductDetails.aspx?ProductRef=005945&Option=005945916

Can you guys help me find a coat similar to this but without that price tag? Cheeky I know but I do quite like it and am kinda rubbish at the whole clothes thing :p

Very interesting jacket... too old-fashioned in styling and colour for my tastes, but looks like a nice piece nonetheless. Can't say i've seen one like it before though, and I wouldn't expect to find one anywhere "cheaply", especially considering it is 100% wool and obviously of very good quality. Maybe this is one of those instances where you should pay a bit of money, make an investment, and then have something that will last you years. It looks like it will last a good while. :)

EDIT - Plus with it being a limited edition you can be sure that you'll probably never see another one like it.

I care how I dress, but there is caring and then there is being exactly like a woman

But it's only issue if you're one of those type of prats who obsess about how manly they look and act, as though there are invisible eyes watching and judging them every second of every day. All Raymond is saying is that he puts a lot of thought into how he dresses, and he used women as an example as they have been doing it successfully for millenia. It doesn't mean he is a woman.
