The Fashion Thread... personal tastes, musings, and recommendations

Does anyone have any suggestions for smart chinos? I’ve worn my work beige pair out and on the hunt for something that works well with Chelsea boots, so quite a straight cut and not skinny. I am 6ft 2 and slim though so nothing too bulky!

I’ve tried Charles tyrwhitt but I’m between waist sizes annoyingly, also tried Reiss but too slim, tried Spoke but they have a weirdly small rise which is quite uncomfortable!

Next stop is Moss probably; but thought I’d see if you fine gents have any suggestions. Would rather not spend more than about £120.

I wear, levi 511 chinos for work, slim fit design, typical Levi quality.

I'm slim, 6'1" and got some M&S Regular Fit Ultimate Chino, they fit well, seem decent quality, really comfy and only £40.
 
Charles Tyrwhitt and Spoke were going to be my suggestions. Unexpectedly I find the M&S ultimate chinos quite good and excellent value for my work chinos.

So out of sheer curiosity and the need for something soft, stretchy and comfortable for just general casual wear I bought some slim fit chinos (not skinny fit!!!) from Amazon and genuinely? They are rather good, quality zipper, stitching is fine etc etc.


My size if 30" waist and 30" leg and this combo is super hard to find on the shelves when I'm out outlet shopping for trousers/jeans/chinos - I had to settle on 30/32 from Timberland recently and whilst it is great quality, I'd have to pay even more to then get it tailored to 30" leg.

The label says 98" cotton, 2% elastane. Made in Bangladesh (of course).

The look and feel matches the recently bought Timberland chinos, though these are stretchy so more comfortable.

Will be interesting to see how they last through several washes as that's the real sign of quality.

I've bought lots of other chinos before too from Boss to other name brands and don't really put any value to a particular brand as any of them can fail, I've had Hacket stuff just break (zipper) for example. A good fit and VFM trumps the logo on the label.

I found M&S have been good for this sort of thing for years, they're often underrated as I guess most millennials perhaps grew up thinking of them as the shop that sells lame clothes aunties and nanas go to.

In terms of office wear they're pretty decent for off-the-rack stuff. Typically Charles Tyrwhitt and TM Lewin are seen as the places to go for entry-level/discount shirts and suits for work but M&S are at least as good if not better IMO.

The dirty secret is that some designer/fashion brands get their suits etc. made in the same factories too - IIRC it was Armani but I'd need to find the tailoring blog post, anyway there was some British tailor guy a while back opining that M&S is up there for off the rack stuff.

I've not tried the ultimate chinos but I have bought some of their "Linen Miracle" stuff for some overseas weddings in the past few years - I got some separate trousers and linen shirts that paired well together for a couple of weddings (in Spain and Greece) and a full linen suit for another wedding that was still rather formal (at an actual Royal Palace in a very hot country!).

On the cheap end they do (or at least did) single-pleat work trousers that look very much like suit trousers but are machine washable too*! A useful alternative to chinos if you're ever in one of those "business casual" dress code companies and don't want to use your actual suit trousers.

*some sort of polyester blend but at a glance they look like suit trousers + they have a bit or stretch for those who've been dodging salads/ordering too many deliveroos!
 
I went "big" and ordered Spoke recently. I was not disappointed. They are really lovely.

Charles Tyrwhitt on the other hand are going in the bed. Really annoying!
