The "fast" lane...

So you think people should break the speed limit to avoid impeding your progress? Get real.

I'm not saying speeding is bad but I am saying you can't expect somebody to speed up past 70mph becuase the guy in the middle lane is doing 67 and you personally think the speed differential is too low.

And before you come back and say who said anything about over 70, don't make me laugh, as I doubt you are reffering to people who overtake in the outside lane at 55 :p

sorry fox but i disagree with you on this, it's as bad as lorrys overtaking each other. If you can't overtake within reasonable time, don't overtake at all imo :/ It really grinds my gears.

Tom.

If someone is hanging next to you, very slowly overtaking or just hanging behind you it is bad driving, full stop

I thought you did the AIM course? They talk about this in their course

So you are saying if you want to be a legal driver, and you come up on your cruise control behind a guy doing 67mph in the middle lane, you should slow down rather than move out and go around him becuase you might annoy some impatient guy who wants to break the speed limit?

Don't be so utterly daft.

Now I dont always drive at 70mph on Motorways but if I chose to exceed the limit its MY choice and I've no real right to be annoyed at those who do not share my views!

It's not a question about annoying someone who wants to break the speed limit it is a question of good driving

You CANNOT expect somebody to break the law when driving becuase the guy in the BMW behind is a bit impatient. Sorry, but thats just utterly unworkable and I find it utterly hilarious that you think that.

No, I'm not the sort of person who'd do this, I always accelerate past people, but thats becuase I have different opinions of the speed limit. You can't expect law abiding motorists to break the law for your personal impatience.

Please suggest a legal course of action thats reasonable to the following problem:

You are travelling at 70mph on the M1, using cruise control. You come up behind a vehicle in the middle lane travelling a few mile per hour less than you.

What ARE you on about "speeding past" I never said that at all...

There's a difference between making resonable progress past someone and dropping a gear and flooring it you know :p

Squeeze the accerator up to 75mph (you'll still probably be doing legal REAL speeds) and waft past. Simple :)

Lets assume you are doing a GPS verified 70 then to avoid cop out answers like this.

You can't drive like it's black and white

For example I will never break the speed limit regardless

If you did a GPS verified 75mph to safely overtake someone in the middle lane doing 67mph I honestly don't see the problem with this

I'm not telling people to break the law it is just good driving

Anyway, we'll have to agree to disagree on this I think :)

I think all that Fox is saying is that if you come up behind somebody doing 70mph you cannot expect them to go faster than the legal limit just because you want to go faster than them. It doesn't seem a hard thing to grasp to me. Its the law.

Whether you choose to break the law is another matter.

It's about consideration... You said you do it, why?

But anyway, this is going now-where and it's pointless arguing about it, you may like arguing your point until you're blue in the face but I don't see the point thanks :) You're not going to change our opinion and we're not going to change yours, accept it :)

I said I do what? I drive over 70mph on the Motorway, yes. I pull up behind somebody overtaking somebody else and think 'doh', yes.

But I'm daft enough to actually believe they should also break the law to avoid holding me up!

You're not going to change our opinion and we're not going to change yours, accept it :)

You don't even seem to be able to accept its your opinion that people should break the law to avoid impeding those who have chosen to speed..

I agree with this

I'm putting forward the following case:

A car is driving in the middle lane at 67mph. Another car comes up behind this car and wishes to pull out so they pull out into the right hand lane.

They should pass the car promptly and not hang alongside the car or just behind it in the outside lane - this isn't good driving

Is this aimed at me?

If so I do it because it is not good driving to hang next to someone on the motorway. As you say it's about consideration and it is also about anticipation

That's true, hence why I said earlier that we're going to have to agree to disagree :)

According to the highway code you shouldn't impede other drivers' progress :p

I thought you could overtake 10mph faster than the speed limit on the motorway?

I do what i have to do on the motorway, i avoid sitting on someones posterior or flashing them, cos i hate that done to me, i will however undertake, i tend to find your average speed is higher in the middle lane in rush hour traffic, but then somedays i just want to sit at 65 gettting max mpg in the left lane, i also get fed up of constantly braking in the outside cos people are driving far too close to each other.

Mind i find driving a black car makes people move out of the way sharpish when coming up behind them :p

My other gripe is the muppets who drive slower than the lorries on the inside lane, they are the ones that cause lorries to move out into the middle lanes, really bloody infuriating.

The worst culprits on our motorways arent lorries, company car drivers or white van drivers tbh,not in my experience anyway (coming upto 250k miles in 7 years now :o)
