The future of Aion

The one thing that's important for mmorpgs is the capability to run on users' systems. This looks fairly counter to that. An mmorpg running on the engine behind Crysis with all the bells and whistles on doesn't exactly scream accessible to me.

One of the biggest factors behind that other mmorpg's success is that anyone and their mother could run it on their machine.

sounds great to be honest, as i ve brought the game already ill deffo try it again when all of this comes out

Aion runs extremely well on my c2d 2.6Ghz 8800GTX setup, even in mass keep battles on full detail so they must have coded something right,..

If more than 20+ people come together within the Ettenmoors in Lotro it can cause no end of lag and stuttering albeit its on a 3yr old engine.

Depends what you are trying to achieve with the MMO I suppose. I personally still think that AoCs graphics look better technically.

Oh, and its not the engine behind Crysis. Its Cryengine 1, not Cryengine 2. So its the engine behind Farcry not Crysis. Though I do understand that a lot of people have got that wrong over the last several months.

lol lol lol I can't believe Knives even thought Aion was running on the Crysis engine :D Even if it was stated everywhere that it was I would flatout disbelieve it!

I have seen my brother playing it (as in what it looks like right now) and it looks really really bad in places like you could confuse it with WoW!

....however that video posted does not look half bad hopefully they get it in game soon so people who are not running rubbish computers can enjoy it (whilst they are still leveling i.e. not as good if it is implimented when you are maxed only playing end game)

I guess if graphics mattered in MMO's everyone would be playing Conan and Aion, yet WoW leave those two games so far behind it's hardly worth mentioning them in the same sentence.

That is not the Cryengine 1! Looking at some of the effects it simply has to be Cryengine 2.

Yep, although WoW doesnt have the technical graphics, it does have a quite nice aesthetic and stylised graphic design to it.

Having said that, WoW still isnt a good MMO for me . :)
Its just not suitable for me. The masses love it though. Goes to show, theres lots of different tastes out there.

Trust me..its absolutely not CryEngine 2 because NCSoft hasnt yet licensed CE2. It is however a modded version of CE1. Unless of course NCsoft are lying, but better you tell them that than I :)

Looks dont always determine how a game will run on a machine. I guess your comparing Aion to WoW in your last statement. All I can say is I've seen wow cripple peoples systems (old and new) due to its bad engine and general old and struggling singlethreaded code.

Advances in tech, code writing and game engines mean that you use more of the hardware available now and make more use out of the older hardware.

Also you have the fact that any game promotion will show you the best of what the game has to offer with everything set on Maximum, there are options there to lower these settings to compensate for older machines.

The minimum specs for both games do not differ that much to be fair, and to ramp WoW up to maximum, you have to have a far more powerful machine than if you were to run Aion at full tilt.

im running a e8400 at 3.6 with the same card and HAD Awful lag, tried drivers, clean out formats etc.

Consistency across specifications seems to be an issue.

For instance, I havent had any large periods of lag, even in keep fights. Got everything on max and have an AMD 6000+ , 4 Gig and an 8800GTX. However a friend with a similar setup gets lag and goes link dead. Not too sure what other differences there is between his machine and mine, just know that mine works great and his doesnt.

that video just looks far too god to be CE1 no matter how much they have modded though, i just cant believe it

I think it's just because their art style is so different to Far Cry - which was ultra realistic compared to the pastel palette, high fantasy setting they've built. Plus it's been around for ages now, I'm sure people can get a lot more out of it now than was done with Far Cry.

It's playable on my work desktop, 2GHz Core Duo (not C2D) + uber ATI x1300 graphics; the lag is the same on my home PC.

Maybe, it puzzles me though that they've managed to find so much oomph (i mean that looks almost as good as aoc in places) from such an old engine. I cant help feeling the performance will be horrible now though as they are pushing the engine too far, parts of that video are clearly going sub 30fps as it is

Well, believe it or not, thats what it is. Unless of course you are calling NCSoft liars :) Thats your choice though, I mean if it was me and my upgraded engine was going to be CryEngine 2, as a developer I would be announcing that loudly, not saying no its simply an enhanced version of CE1.

I'm not surprised myself, I have seen some quite incredible things done by professionals with CryEngine 1, far better even than in that video. Far Cry, although impressive for its time, really only very lightly touched upon the capabilities of CE1 and CE1.5

Tsk tsk , shame on you !! Think positively not negatively ! :D
