University..omg at the upload speed! :eek:
 
I dont like any of these online website speed tests, they never give true results, my 20mb virgin connection is showing im getting around 14mb and ive done a few tests but this is way out, if i load of newsleecher and get leeching off my news server i can max out my 20mb no problem at a download speed of 2.35mb/s.

Upload Speed: 7494 kbps (936.8 KB/sec transfer rate)

College's internet. Pretty good upload too.

Numbers may match up, but it still doesn't help the fact I get failed DNS lookups and "Page not found" and "Page time out" on almost every single first connection to a web page.

i use another isp's dns servers with my vm connection

Upload Speed: 729 kbps (91.1 KB/sec transfer rate)

Which is "poor" for 20mb Virgin. But just 5 minutes ago I was happily downloading at 2.35MB/s from newsgroups, which is all I really care about if I'm honest.

I wouldn't complain about 1Mb/s download speed. My max at the minute is 200Kb/s. Should be back to my normal 280-300Kb/s once i organise these wires :(

It's funny how these things come around again isn't it. 30+ year old tech, and not more than a few years ago people would give you balnk looks when mentioning Usenet or net news.

Now, it seems everyman and his dog have fat pipes which are only getting used to their full capacity on Usenet!

I don't know about you personally, timmymagic,(you may have been 'there' from the beginning what do i know?) but I keep seeing mentions of usenet around A LOT now. I thought the 1st rule of Usenet was not to talk about Usenet....

Sky Max .. and I'm only about 150m from the exchange.
 
My results were:
1952 Kbps download speed
242 kbps upload speed

2mb Bt broadband

Are theses results good or bad?

Now getting 'Download Speed: 6445 kbps (805.6 KB/sec transfer rate)', so I was pretty much right about the daytime speeds.
 
Bang on 4pm, with no chance to have triggered the traffic shaping, I am reduced to this:

Upload Speed: 132 kbps (16.5 KB/sec transfer rate)

I get to enjoy fluctuating pings and DNS timeouts later too :p

Useless aren't they? Have you tried logging a fault with them over the high pings and DNS timeouts?

Yeah, I've had a few outright losses in service that have been logged but I've never complained about pings or DNS timeouts. I suppose I should start to build up a fault history but it's gonna mean 25p a min calls to them pretty much every day which I stongly suspect will entail them trying to get my to run through their checklist (turn off p2p etc) and claiming that it must be the sites/servers I'm visiting that are having problems.

With the state of http://status-cable.virginmedia.com/vmstatus/summary.do here I'm sure they have a pretty good idea of how much the network struggles at any other time than the wee hours.
