The game that was better than WoW (and probably still is)

Ha, I couldn't stand UO although to be fair it was my first MMO and I hadn't wrapped my head around the concept at all when I first started playing. All I remember is getting out of the town I started in, someone killed me and stole all my stuff  I never played after that lol. EQ2 was great in it's day, for me personally the introduction of an ingame cash shop has ruined the game a bit and I ended up cancelling as a result. I did briefly try the 'Free to play' EQ2X but it just seemed too restrictive unless you were prepared to sub.

That was part of what made it so special, actual danger when leaving the protection of towns, the wilds were really the wilds, you developed an actual fear and concern for your well being rather than thinking of death as nothing more than a form of swift travel to get back to point A. :)

:( I guess I was probably one of worlds first mmo carebears ;) of course I get it now and quite enjoy PvP these days, It's a shame I didn't get it back then, reading some of the previous UO nostalgia threads on these forums in the past has made me feel that I missed out on something special.

I rate the F2P mages vastly inferior to WoW and the none F2P ones. To a point I don’t like playing them, love my mage in WoW. They rely on the root then nuke mechanic. But EQ2 spell have a long cast time, high cool down and spell miss. Makes it too unreliable for me. Like I said the none F2P mage classes are much better.

first up i never played the F2P version.

but saying that mages are unreliable in eq2? i don't know. Also looking at your chars you got a conji which is a pet class.

you might wanna try play wizard and you'll get your root'n'nuke.

on a personal note
i still think EQ2 is better than WOW but im probably biased since it was my first MMO :D

i also do like WOW but you just don't get your 24 classes to pick from which kinda gets canceled out with the different Talent tree specs possible in WOW.
Where as there is normally only 1 real AA spec in EQ2 (there might be a 2nd one for some classes).

speaking graphicly EQ2 is far superior to WOW (not talking about stryle) but i don't think there is still no computer which will run it at maxed on everything at a decent FPS rate, but this is also due to that the EQ2 engine is coded like a pile of turd

some things that made WOW so succesful:

-low sys requirements back then compared to EQ2, also the style of the graphics from WOW seems to be more appealing to a lot of peeps compared to EQ2
-you didnt need a credit card to play it (i know theres game cards in EQ2 as well but they are hard to come by unless you live in the US) I also think WOW is cheaper than EQ2 but not 100% sure
-EQ2 low level is pretty much dead unless you get people to mentor where as WOW isn't
- EQ2 marketing is poo :(
- Sony in general is just screwing the with their community (which i haven't really heard of blizzard)

that pretty much sums it up for me really

I like the idea of having an actual house. WoW fails on the RP massively for me. EVen the RP servers have people called Leerooy, BEpala and Leeegolas.

So... report them? I used to play on Argent Dawn many moons ago, and i'd be regularly reporting non-RP names. Few days later - all sorted.

It's not like the GMs have time to go around doing /who and telling people to change their name is it?

Like I said the free mages, ie warlock and wizard. My conj isn’t a “free” class.

I had a wizard and it seemed a race who died first, me or the mob. Half the time my root didn’t work and when it did if often broke and was not possible to recast it. The conj pet makes life much easier as it a decent tank, not great. I’ve taken down mobs with it I can’t on other classes.

EQ2 my first mmo too. Played on and off over the last 6 years. More off then on though.

Think WoW the better game but that’s doesn’t mean EQ2 bad and not worth playing.

If you ask me, EQ2’s 24 classes part of it problems. It hard for new players to understand what they all do and mean. And some still make no sense to me. Ie the troub which is a melee class that buffs caster. Great for caster heavy groups but rather nonsensical for anything else.

-EQ2 low level is pretty much dead unless you get people to mentor where as WOW isn't

Not on the F2P servers. You find loads of low level groups but struggle at max. The mid-level stuff not very good which causes people to quit.

Do they even have a marketing department!! DC Online out today. Seen any adds/previews for it?!

with wizards the problem as is with all classes you just need your spells not just to be app1 spells (or whatever they are called now since it's changed).
spell quality is really important especially later on in the game since you'll just get so much more dmg out of it.
Roots break on dmg so don't cast dots only cast DD spells =)
as for taking mobs down as soon as it was CCable i took it down on my Wiz
could probably take others down as well but i cant kite for **** :D

I played EQII for over a year close to release with a great team of workmates. I gave up in a rage when they nerfed the Guardian class -- my main toon that I'd put so much effort and training into.

He went from an excellent tank to, what SOE called, the "unsung hero" of the classes -- ie. the Guardian might well have just been taken out of the game for all the specialism he had left.

Never went back. Now playing LOTRO with a lifetime sub and prefer it over EQII, tbh, though I still have a fondness for it and the many, MANY hours it sucked from my life!

i played wow for 4 years, i have never played EQ2 but readin this post makes me want to check it out, tho wow sucked almost every spare minute i had infact more, at 1 point i remember staying up playing none stop for 38 hours.

after you have done that you know you have a problem lol, it used to be same 10-15 years ago playing the playstation lol i used to go sit at the dinner table and start picturing red circle on forks, a blue X on spoons and a green triangle on my cup lol, thats when u know you've been infront of the game console far too much lol.
anyways... got side tracked a bit there, i'm actually in 2 minds to whether or not i should try this EQ2, tho i never seen it before it does sound like a game i could get highly addicted to and i only just stopped myself from buying the newly released wow expansion (cata). infact i know i could get highly addicted to this game, it does sound awsome and it says them magical words that sound so appealing no matter what language the words are spoken (play for free)

I never played EQ2 but i only play Wow for pvp (arena) for glad title and mounts, Is their anything like this in EQ2 ?

Played EQ2 very, very briefly years ago, thought it was quite good. I might venture into mmorpg's one day, if I do I'll consider something like NWN / Vanguard.

EverQuest -1- oldtimer here. Played since Kunark (2000).

EQ2 had some good points, but for me it wasn't a patch on EQ1. EQ1 (1999-2003) had everything you could want as an MMO RPG gamer. It was the best I've ever played.

Everquest 2 in a somewhat restricted form(like LoTRO) is available as free to play. The graphical problems have been sorted, and it runs in flash (as far as I can tell) which is an amazing achievement. No massive disk space loss.

It does not use flash, it's the same engine as it ever was which means it still has all the old limitations as it was developed to run on high GHz CPU's that never arrived, it has had additions to help with multicore CPU's and GPU workloads but these have also caused issues.

The streaming client is great for getting into the game nice and fast but will eventually download the entire game so you will end up with around 10.5GB of downloaded data.

Personally, they ruined EQ2 with the Shadow Odyssey but I'd still rather play it than WoW as the OP's comments regarding the community are spot on.

i did start to wonder what size capacity i'd need on my drive, thnx :)

EQ1 is too hardcore and wouldn't get anywhere nowadays, shame really that i never played it. only a good friend of mine told me all the stories about his adventures he's had :(
