Well looks like thats the card I will be going for. Had my fair share of nVidia cards in the past with coil whine. Will give MSI a try this time around I think.

Hopefully the 7870 will hold out until it arrives as its having some major issues recently.

If it helps, the MSI 980 Gaming is 30 dB under load and the MSI 390X Gaming is 40 dB under load, so ~35 for the 980ti would be a safe bet.

should be great at 1440p and should last for at least 2 years

I'm looking to get 2 x gtx 980ti. I've never had an sli rig before. What's your experience with sli is it worth it or a complete hassle. Do most games work ok or will I spend most time tweaking

these cards are very heavy , but come with a really nice backplate and feel solid. cant wait to try them out.

A lot depends on your resolution as to whether it's worth it. If you're on 4K the extra grunt will be much appreciated. 1440p or less and you might find life easier to stay with one unless you must have 100fps all the time. SLI/crossfire is not guaranteed to work all the time, they depend on adequate drivers, you have to take that in to consideration.
