I normally leave vsync off in actual game menus. So for example GTAV, I have the vsync option in game off, but within Nvidia Control panel I force it to adaptive as it prevents stuttering whilst locking it in at 60fps.
For mad max, adaptive doesn't seem to work too well(stuttering) so I once again put vsync off within the game itself, but force vsync On via NVidia control panel - once again 60fps and no stuttering.
I generally never use in game vsync options as the Nvidia control panel does such a good job at doing it and you can set it up as you want, per game you have.
Also - I don't use fraps anymore which is why I migrated my vsync options back to NVC.
