Above 80 is a bit high tho no? They need more air. Might work fine when not overheating.
Bit of an odd one, was playing battlefront and suddenly noticed my gpu fans ramp up to 100% for a few seconds then spin back down, about a minute or so later the same thing, screen goes grey and the monitor shuts off, had to reboot. Hadn't loaded up afterburner so wasn't running any overclocks.
Just seemed like the fans hadn't kicked in at all and the card was running passively til it got too hot.
I'm not sure what the issue is, or if my suggestion will help but...
I don't use the default fan profile as I don't like the idea of the fans not running at all. I set a profile up so that the fans spin at around 30% when idle, this keeps idle temps down and I find actually keeps overall temps down a little as there's no hot air just sitting around my card.
So about my card hitting 80c and above which was causing the artifacts. I use Precision X and on my 780ti's I would always max out the power and temp throttle option. Well doing this on the 980ti's isn't really worth while since these buggers are beasts and it was also causing my temps to ramp up. Now it's much better, only maxing at around 66c on the top card so thankfully all is good again.
Appreciate the help guys!
Damn MrZippo, I wish I'd seen mechacrash's post earlier I could have saved you the trouble.I pulled out my card just for you.
It's not 100% perfect due to it being difficult to hold the measuring tape and take a photo but I hope it gives you an idea on how think the card is.

I would've just had to pull my card out of its box to measure it.
Not got the rest of the PC to put it in yet as most of the parts I picked didn't appear in any sales or were cheaper before.
So far just got the 980 Ti and a 5930K which makes me smile when I think about how cheap I got it.
Thanks for being so helpful anyway. It's no problem as it just takes about 5 mins to take out and another 5 mins to put it back.
Nice PC parts you got there. What other parts are you looking to get?
Had these turn up today
Actually got one more on order & the waterblocks turning up somepoint next week (then I can finally finish the loop I started back in March)
