The Handshake...

How weird is that?
Watching MOTD and Wayne Rooney has just gone down the line where they all shake hands with the opposition, he shakes about 4 normally (ref, linesman, mascot, player) , then instinctively does a rocker handshake with the opposition goalkeeper and goes back to normal handshaking.

Are they secret Rockers/Bikers?

Is there anything worse than a floppy, weak, cold and damp handshake?

Yes there is and that is a hug manly or otherwise or air kiss, one cheek or two, if anyone so much as looks like they are going to air kiss or hug they are left in no doubt by the look on my face that this is a no no, I hate it.

I overcompensate though, did it at an interview once as a young lad as my dad came out with the whole a strong handshake is the best first impression.

Anyway long story short I did that, something clicked in his hand and the interview lasted all of 10 minutes of awkward conversation where he clearly didn't want to continue.

Bad Times :D

I'm now overly conscious of whether I'm gripping too hard and I worry whether I'm limp fishing just to avoid the above

Oh this!

I had this the other day, barely knew the guy I guess he was nervous but inexplicably he went in for the hug and my handshake collided with his stomach.

I'm a but funny about my personal space so it properly freaked me out.

Some people seem to think that one has to give the hardest handshake they can muster! Why? lol

Illuminati confirmed:eek:

I interviewed someone recently and their handshake was awful. Nothing to it, more of a stroke.

I was instantly put off I must say,

The handshake means nothing nowadays. I've met a few powerful people and they all had weak handshakes as they don't bother much with body language. They earned their money and influence through brain power and you can't project that through a handshake, it shines on its own when you are the smartest person in the room.

Maybe that's because they've got the money and power, so feel no need to bother with peasants and a firm handshake.

First job interview in about 15 years tomorrow!

Its for a fairly hands on grease monkey job ( tyre-exhaust fitter ) so im guessing a nice strong handshake and good eye contact.... maybe beat my chest and urinate on his desk to assert my dominance?

I think you will find that your qualifications and experience will be the deciding factor. Your handshake is only valued by moronic people. So pray to your imaginary friend that your future boss is not a moron. ;)

A masters degree and 100 years experience?

I'll agree with op. but i shall also add. it's also incredibly pathetic when you meet some one who has an overtly strong handshake that is just pathetic and you know they're doing it because, ' they don't want to be weak '. an egotistical man shake.

I was told when i was about 11 a firm handshake gives a good impression of confidence etc. etc.

Since then, always a conscious thought when I shake hands.

Exactly that. When I was young my old man said always greet a person with a firm shake of the hand. He said if anyone offers a weak hand in return it's a sign of weakness and disrespect.

Alternatively it's mindless social conditioning, based on archaic traditions and thinking, passed down since the times when people believed lightning was Thor teabagging the Earth or something.

Question everything, reject social norms if you don't see the point in them. A handshake is meaningless 99% of the time. Firm, flaccid, warm, moist, who cares.

But then I hate pretty much all social norms and am a complete social trainwreck, so YMMV :p
