The high definition generation and lack of standardisation

Plug in hdmi, select optimal, go.

Indeed. Plugged the PS3 in via HDMI. It knew immediately what the TV could support and just... worked. Simple. Oh I do live the PS3. I only just started using it after having it for months, now exams arrive. No PS3 until May 28th. :(

Plug in hdmi, select optimal, go.

or plug in component, set highest progressive output, go.
Compared to just plugging it in and not doing anything? ;).

I will admit though, that my PS3 was pretty idiot proof to setup. :p.
Automatically picked 1080p for me. :).
Did have to set the sound to go over optical manually though.

I have a 26" 720P TV. I plug Xbox 360 into it via supplied component. I set the Xbox 360 to 720P in the set-up menu. Everything looks great.

I fail to see where the complication lies.

You mean the component cables you had to pay extra for to make your HD console run in HD?

Part of the problem with HD Consoles and confusion is partly due to the fact that none of them bar the 360 Elite? come with HD Cables, infact they come with the worst possible cables - composite.

Huh

The premium comes with HD cables. That's about 90% of them. Only core owners had to buy them.

360 does the same, it's more of a feature of HDMI simplifying things rather than a console specific feature.

I know that buddy :) Just getting withdrawal symptoms. Looking at brains, whilst I do love it, gets a bit tedious after a while and I want some console action. If I had a 360 I'd no doubt say I love that too, but I only have the PS3 so far :)

Fair enough, I was just pointing out that HDMI generally makes things much more simple rather than it being a console specific feature. I probably shouldn't have quoted you when making that point as it looks like I'm making my point against you.

No problemo! :) HDMI is a good simple connection. Long gone are the days of reaching around the back of the TV, blind, using SCART for me :S ;)

Just get a Pioneer PDP420XD for £1100 or -if you're looking for something bigger- a Pioneer PDPLX508D for £3000, plug in via HDMI and enjoy. The picture will be so good, that you simply will not CARE how it's set up.

I own both these TVs, and both have handled all HD and SD sources nicely

Ok, one's that are actually good. ;).

I got a HDMI cable brand new for the bay for £2.99 there are loads on there, I’ve got a HDMI cable that I got with my Laptop (free) that retails for £30 there is no difference between the two at all, in fact I’ve seen HDMI cables cheaper than £2.99.

agreed, Im a strong supporter of the idea that all hdmi cables are exactly the same due to it being a digital cable. Maybe if it was 10m long or something you'd need a better quality but any normal length one will be the same.
