Wow, Half life 2 has aged incredibly well

It has indeed. There is also the "fakefactory cinematic mod" which improves the look of the game a lot but also ruins the atmosphere and wrecks the characters, especially Alyx. I posted some pictures below.

I guess it shows you don't need all your fancy lighting effects to make a game look ok, and it annoys me when developers go over the top with them rather than focusing on other things like textures and shadows. If you add over the top lighting to HL2 it looks terrible. I like Skyrim a lot for this because it doesn't care about lighting, it just wants the lighting to look normal.

That last picture is actually disturbing and pretty much ruins how the character of Alyx is presented in the game. How to ruin your graphics mod and make people not install it, guys.

And that BF3 shot looks amazing. Wish I could get mine even 10% close to that.

Are you playing it modded? I got it on Steam at christmas and only had an hour on if a few weeks ago and yor screenies look a lot better than when I played. My PC can handle it, honest!!!

By the way, it's been quite heavily compressed by the looks of things (the picture). I highly recommend Steam screenshots or Afterburner for screenshots but it's probably imageshack's fault. I highly recommend Imgur (http://imgur.com/) for uploading screenshots.

Always just used fraps for screenshots but will look in to Afterburner later tonight if i am on.

Are you running the FXAA Injector or is stock, cant decide if the colours look different...

Definitely using an Injector you can tell by the colours. Mine looks similar to that but without AA.

Stock seems a bit darker on that map,

They look like Battlefield 3 in terms of art style, and seeing as they just announced a big new map, it must be.
