*** The Hobbit: The Desolation Of Smaug ***

Saw this on the IMAX 3D screen and it was mind blowing !! Visually stunning with possibly the best sound effects I've experienced.

Yes, there's ton's of liberties taken and a lot of extra garnish thrown in but purely from an entertainment view it gets full marks, a must see.

I thought it was much better than the first, but still not a patch on LotR. Was also happier with the HFR 3D this time around as I rarely got the feeling of 'fast-mo' that was evident before.

As others have mentioned whilst much of the CGI is stunning, there are a couple of parts where the film is let down..

the Terminator 2 gold/liquid in the forge being the standout one for me

I went to watch this at the cinema, first time I have ever seen 3d. I was very impressed with the 3d and sound, the film was good as well. I thought it was better than the first hobbit by a lot. There was a few parts that i didn't like and i never read the book. But probably the best cinema experience i have had so far.

I'll just leave this here....

Well this image is bad.

She is drawing the arrow with 2 fingers? Is it a kids bow?
The arrow is on the wrong side of the bow - should be on the left for a right handed archer
Her quiver is dangerously close to being hit by the string.
And her grip is like that of a vice.

To mention just a few. At least the hunger games movies actually checked these kind of things out.

:( I take it you shoot arrows your self ?

Using only Two fingers has no bearing or any relation to it being a kids boy.

The arrow isn't on the wrong side of the bow, it's a style used in old Asian/ Turkish archery.

Doesn't matter how close you think the string is to the quiver, as long as its not hitting it .

Your assuming her grip is like a vice, possibly because her hand is closed ? she could be holding it feather light for all you can see in that posed picture.

Like HFR, I dont know what to think about this trilogy - if LoTR hadnt preceded it I would have been far more negative, rather than feeling I should keep giving it chances...

Lovely looking movies just poorly screenwritten IMHO, just feels like its dragging for the sake of fitting across 3 films - LoTR felt the opposite...

ps3ud0

Well, if you hate that, then don't look at what she is doing with her left hand [finger] in this pic

I used to pull a heavy bow (I was one of the Goring Gap Bowmen) with two fingers, one above, one below the arrow. It felt right for me and I was a good archer [many years ago]. I've been to summer fairs, where clubs sometimes come in, and they force you to shoot with three fingers below the arrow, which feels weird to be.

Anyway... waaaay OT :p

This drives me insane :p:p

But back on topic. I saw the film a few days ago and enjoyed it. However. I felt like there was almost too much going on at the end.
The dragon was fantastic, but the part where the big statue melts was ridiculous; defying gravity or what? Apart from that I felt like my money was well spent.

I enjoyed it a lot. It was better than the first part (which I still enjoyed). I'm looking forward to part 3!

Watched it last night, overall enjoyed it very much...

I do feel here is a bit too much flipping about for no reason though and we haven't really seen the dwarves just have a good dust up, going toe to toe with the orcs without it getting a bit over the top. Wasn't a fan of the gold statue bit, seemed poorly done.

It didn't defy gravity!.
They'd just poured a few hundred tonnes of White Hot Gold into a very large mold and left it only long enough for a thin skin to form on the inside of the mold its self. Once this skin melted again with the temperature of the still hot gold inside it, and the fact that it's quite heavy now not supported by the mold anymore, it split out and collapsed, pouring the still molten Gold in all directions!!
:D

What was disspaointing though

no one ******* died, bad ass dragon who slaughtered everyone couldn't kill a few dwarfs, and as for the orks out numbering them about 6 to 1 or more at some points and all they achieve is one single arrow in the leg, retarded. Made _ great film in to a good film.

Ha yes this is a very good point, hadn't occurred to me while watching.

Many saying the film was too long and scenes were dragged out. Personally I quite enjoyed this, they lingered in places for longer than I remember in the LOTR films, which just allowed me to enjoy them more. Still felt the story flowed fairly well.

The ending caught me off guard as well, some cliffhanger. Might just have to read the book now, don't think I can wait.

Was quite cool in 3D

The flying head decapitation bit was funny and very effective

I wasn't overly gone on it though - while it was quality entertainment its by far the weakest of the movies so far IMO - it does follow progress through the book content wise but it basically felt like "how many funny scenes can we cram in of stuff fighting orcs".

Saw this last night in basic 2d. I found the film to be average and relatively entertaining. However, it did go on for a long time. Some of the action scenes were a bit daft, especially the barrels bit. I felt it cheapened it a little and was almost typical of the sort of drivel you find in the Pirates of the Carribean films.
