The "if you don't look 21" rule

I have a huge problem with this rule and a little story to go with it.

I am 19 years old and yes unfortunatly I smoke. I go out with the lads for a few pints and smoke down the pub etc etc.

The other day I went for a few beers with my dad before I went off to Uni so before going I popped into Asda to get some cigs just like I do every week before I go out on a friday night. I goes upto the kiosk thing as asks for my 20 Lambert and I get asked for ID (first time in 2 years) so I takes out my college ID (which I have been using until I get my Uni ID or NUS card) just like I do when I occassionally asked in the pub. "I'm sorry" she says "we can only accept a drivers licence or passport". WTF I thought, I don't usually get ID'd in here anyways and since when has it been drivers licence or passport only.

Anyways not best pleased (as I informed her) my dad was going to get them instead but she wouldn't sell them to him either because she sed she knew they were for me :/ then my dad been my dad asked for the manager. Down he came and explained that it was a new government scheme that they started that day (the over 21 thing and the drivers licence/passport thing) and after raising the issue of how many people carry their passport round with them and what if you don't drive he agree and then after showing him my college ID he went to the kiosk with me and told them to serve me.

Anyhow after all that I think you can gather that I don't like this "look over 21" rule that everywhere is using now. What has looking over 21 got to do with been 18 and old enough to drink and smoke. I look over 18 but I don't think anyone would say I looked over 21 and that alone is enough not to be served. ridiculous tbh.

Edit: After reading a few more posts I just realised I don't actaully have a passport nevermind a drivers licence.

My sister is 23 and didnt have any proof of age and was not allowed in any clubs/pubs.

It is abit silly.

my point exactly - ok i admit you should always carry ID but... she may well look 18+ but because she doesn't look 21 then shes not allowed in :/

the rule sux

exactly my point

Fair bit of irony there- go out drinking and dont get IDed but then get IDed asking for cigarettes (which you only need to be 16 to buy so the 21/18 doesnt apply anyway).

I should point out that I am generally against the idea of having to prove who I am to people who have no official business of knowing, mainly because it inconveniences me and because in this day and age a name and (possible) address can be abused and therefore I think this sort of info should be on a need to know basis. And if you dont know me and unless you're a) the police b) border control c) MI5 you don't need to know :)

p.s. I should add that I am generally anti-authority and pro-liberty anyway, and I am a bit of a keyboard warrior ;)

I think the reason why they got so strict on forms of ID was because of websites like this we've had loads of kids trying to buy drinks with these over the pas two or three years and now its near enough stopped because they know people won't accept anything apart from passport drivers license or PASS card. The downside however is in cases like R34P3Rs case were he cant use his college cards. I reckon that they should extend the rule to uni passes and such like however like i said before if you don't had a passport or a drivers license get a PASS card.
