The Indoor Riding/ Zwift/ TrainerRoad etc. Thread

Only just started reading about zwift and it looks amazing, at the moment I'm using my road bike on a dumb elite turbo trainer and getting all my data from a Sigma 2209 sts cycle computer which does cadence, speed and HRM but I don't think its Ant+ or BT so of no use on the swift.

I'm thinking of buying the Tacx Flow T2240 Smart Turbo Trainer and a new cycle computer with sensors I can use with the tacx, I'm a bit lost here tbh. I also have the option of using zwift on my iPad Air 2 or a desktop PC on a 55" TV

What would be a cycle computer that would work with tacx/zwift but also on the road? I'd really like something with satnav as well but from what I've read I'd be better off using google maps on a smart phone.

You dont need a cycle computer to use on the trainer if you are using zwift as zwift does all the working out and displays all your stats and controls your smart trainer. Most smart trainers should have the relevant sensors as part of the package.

If you want a computer for the road then a Garmin of some sort or a Wahoo Elment. The problem with a phone is battery drain, whilst a cycle computer can last hours and hours.

Hi Gents, Hoping you can help. What is currently the best value way of getting into the VR training/turbo scene. I have a bike! iPad/Computer and a warm dry space. Thanks, Si

Your best bet is probably to start with a smart trainer, and then try Trainer Road/Sufferfest/Zwift to find one you like, then start a program.

Should the rider list before 'Riding' on the Zwift menu not show followed riders currently riding at the top? Mine is in alphabetical order currently but thought it prioritised them to save scrolling & searching?

I get dead knob after about 40 mins

You probably stand up more when riding on the road?

I think a fully fixed bike doesn't help with this. Maybe the rock N roll & the Neo which allow for a bit of movement are better.

I just did 45 mins after dinner as I have hardly been riding and needed to do something!

Had to really cut back on the food so I don't pile weight on, combined with sitting on my backside all day at work meant I felt flat as a tack.

On the road I'm fine, it's just the trainer. I don't get out the saddle really at all. I like food, so am continuing to aim for 200km a week. Only hit 100 so far, so going to get a morning ride in tomorrow and then Pretzel full route at the weekend.

Definitely need to get in the habit of standing up more and shifting sitting position on the turbo. I'm really bad for it and end up with a bit of a numb feeling if I'm not concentrating.

Can do 2.5-3hours without any discomfort and without standing that regularly and my saddle is far from comfortable!

A good bench mark is to sit up & back briefly during a recovery interval, ride the drops occasionally and any other position that allows you to move about on the saddle.

Standing for 30-60 seconds every 15-20 minutes or more regularly if needed. Making sure your chamois is correctly placed too is often overlooked.

I find much towards 2 hours I'll start getting a numb arse/perinial (or whatever that bit is called!?). Some of us have softer arses than yours! ;)

On the turbo it's not just about standing, much of the positioning changing on the road is from leaning into corners, which you obviously can't replicate on 90% of trainers.

I'm actually keeping my eyes open for a replacement saddle, I've noticed much less pain when riding 3+ hours out on the roads on the Specialized Phenom Comp on my Diverge. On my Giant (my turbo bike) I'm running a Fizik Arione, which was loads better than the others I tried (Giant Contact Pro & Charge Spoon) but would occasionally give me the odd sore/rub. I think it's just too firm for turbo use. I think the Phenoms slight dip towards the nose helps with some relief and then the cut out allows much more blood flow further back. I'd previously thought I needed a narrower firmer saddle, but I certainly rocked more on the Arione than the Phenom.

*Edit* I've just been reading up on it — my Elite trainer has five resistance levels. Apparently, Zwift's power calculations are based on this being set to level 3 — I always ride at level 5 because anything else doesn't provide enough resistance… looks like I'll have to change it to 3 and run the test again.

Got the turbo trainer and Zwift dialed in now - definitely had in on the wrong setting before. I did the full FTP test again and I've never sweated so much in my life!

I went for it and ordered a Tacx Flow 2240, iPad holder, cycle mat and a turbo tyre which should be ready for collection this Tuesday, I'm assuming 10% British Cycling discount with this lot?

Cycle computer wise I'm leaning towards the Wahoo Elemnt although the Garmin 520 does look nicer and is cheaper.

Will this work?

In my spare room I have a decent 55" TV with Steam Link attached via Ethernet to my Desktop (i7/16GB/1070) in another room, I can minimise steam and have my desktop on the TV.

Would I be able to plug in a Ant+ dongle in the Steam Link or in to my Desktop PC via a extension cable and stream Zwift? I do have an iPad Air 2 if this doesn't work :)
