The internet is running out?

Was just about to make some sort of reference to that episode. Bloody loved it.

Begs the question.... Could the world survive without the internet?

lol

When they are at that camp with thousands of people, and they have a single pc and everyone has to take it in turn, for 20 seconds :p

I like how they've stated its his FAULT.

Lets go blame it on the dude that made our lives so great with the Internets.

Authentic IPv4 address for sale, one careful previous owner, only €200,000!

Since IPv4 addresses are becoming rare commodities this price can only increase so BUY NOW before it's too late!

!!!!!!!

It was ridiculously short sighted of him to only allow for about 4.5 billion addresses. At least with IPv6 there's no chance of running out since there's so many possibilities.

Actually, you will find its the consoles that are to blame for this. So many connected to the internet. Once an XBox RROD's, thats the IP deleted forever. Once it is used up, thats it!

ipv4 to ipv6, ipv6 supporting 2^128 compared with ipv4 supporting 2^32 iirc due to it using a 128 bit address in ipv6 compared with 32 bit address in ipv4

Well.... yeah, that's rather obvious; not really relevant in direct context to this discussion though?

It's not just the sheer address range that has to be considered. We have to remember that in the very early years of the Internet we were subject to classfull addressing, which resulted in people being allocated blocks of IP addresses with much more than what they needed. There are still a number of organisations with class A addresses, which probably isn't needed, some of which have relinquished their block back to the "pool".

Ipv6 doesn't just give us a larger address space, there's a lot more efficiency, security and scalability, amongst other things.

Is it? Ip is not a hard coded burnt in address. How could it possibly be deleted if a console dies, as the xbox would be a device on the LAN with a private address. The wan address would be assigned to the router

I don't think it's deleted but once used they obviously can't use the same address with another console since it would crash the internet if they were both on at the same time (companies have to be very careful about this as it can lead to a lot of embarrassment much like the great 1993 crash caused by Google).

Perhaps they do something similar to phone companies whereby the ip addresses are put back into circulation if they haven't registered against a server after a certain point in time.

Your console will just be behind a NAT...

Think your missing the point, the xbox doesn't get assigned a public address as it's a Natted device. Your router will be the public facing device which will either have a static ip address or dynamic from your ISP

He's joking :p

Don't be silly. You are probably getting confused with the console's unique ID (within the console's keyvault). This has nothing to do with it's IP address though.

I have enough trouble remembering IPv4 addresses. Remembering IPv6 hex addresses should be a hoot.

Damn right!

I only noticed this the other day after updating my router firmware:
