The 'is there a better FPS than Half-Life' thread

I LOVE the HL games... all of them!!

I'm not a huge gamer, so ive not played loads of other games, although ive played:
quake 3,
crysis 1+warhead,
Far cry (although i couldnt get past the helecopter bit without cheating, which then ruined the game)
Tried system shock 2, and deus ex, but couldnt get on with them (I admit i probably didnt give them enough time.

but for me, that only helps make the half life games better to play.

I dont have mad FPS Skills hehe, so i struggle with running around with rocket launchers shooting everything that moves type games, so Doom etc dont really do it for me (although i appreciate what they bring to the table).

I dont have a particularly good memory either, so any more than about 12 keys required to play the game, and i struggle to remember what key does what, looking it up every time ruins the flow of the game for me.

For me, The Half life games are the perfect mix... you can run in, machine gun blazing, or snipe from afar with the crossbow. I find the games are not too complicated in terms of control, and all this helps the story of the game come through un-interupted.

For a non Hardcore gamer here... Half-life is the best... in fact im itching for another run of halflife 1, come on Black Mesa... where are you???

I also need a new halflife to play, so come on valve!! sort it out!!

HL2 for me is the greatest FPS I've ever played. That game stirred actual emotions in me.

We Don't Go To Ravenholm is just ... magic. I've never played such an awesome, weird, random and perfect level. High Way 17 right after that stirred some nostalgia in me. There's something about that lonely road with the moaning of the mighty ocean that just make me keep coming back to it.

Another game that I also thought as brilliant was Bioshock 1. Killing Big Daddies on the hardest level actually had me plot the kill and the route of the kill with pen and paper. Awesome idea for a game, awesome level design and near perfect execution of the whole thing.

Half Life 2 was very good but I have only played it twice. The following games I keep going back to again and again:

1) Return to Castle Wolfenstein
2) Soldier of Fortune
3) Medal of Honor

These three have to be ahead of it. Stalker & Bioshock are also very good;).

Meh I preferred Quake II

The games using it's engine like counter strike and DOD I do enjoy loads though.

Return to Castle Wolfenstein

Awesome single player and the multiplayer has yet to be beaten (although i am partial to Hardcore SnD on COD MW2 and MW4l, i know very very sad)

You need to take into account when it was released - HL1 was amazing for the time. More recent games have obviously been influenced by everything that came before.

Glad to see someone else shares the love of Bioshock 1. The atmosphere was another astounding feature of that game, as well as the high-concept.

Wow out of all the games mentioned here the only one I have played I'd half life, and that wasn't long ago, months!

Wonder if I should give some a gk

Crysis was excellent. One of my favourite games to date. Half Life 2 I found boring, driving to places all of the time...

Duke Nukem Forever was actually alright if you exclude "The Hive" and the dodgy poker chips. ;)

The HL1 end boss was a bit of a damp squid.

hmmm.... Thief series? I wish they re-did those. Dishonoured, with stealth (looks quite A.C. in its setup).

damn good shout with the thief series. i loved the third one so much that i bought 1 and 2 recently.

you know that thief 4 is in the works dont you?
