The 'is there a better FPS than Half-Life' thread

I tend to put games like SS2, Stalker, Deus Ex and Fall Out into a separate category since they are fps with role playing thrown in. Comparing HL to other shooters, I would say it certainly is one thee best I've ever played, though all in all I enjoyed Fear's story more, and possibly Far Cry as well. Oh, and Unreal! :D

I agree that STALKER was even better than HL2 but I've never considered it an FPS, its an RPG with FPS mechanics, infact I think it's the best RPG in recent memory.
I loved HL2 + episodes, must admit I've been waiting to play HL1 'till Black Mesa - with hindsight that might have been the most sensible decision.

Doom 3? I loved that game.
I never really got into HL2 for some reason, however i did install it again the other week to have another go.

hitman series
turok
fear
maxpayne
soldier of fortune series
prototype
prey
crysis 2

my best fps apart from the more known ones like cs, cod etc

What?....

Half life one is still the greatest fps for me. Coming up that elevator shaft to meet your first soldier to then get shot at with the music is probably my fab gaming moment ever. The shift in gears at that point in the game is unsurpassed (AI, weapons, plot twist, level design) to this day. The only game to come close is Crysis, but that was reverse gear when the aliens showed up

Having said that System shock 2 is still the king overall for me but I don't class it as an FPS really!

I sort of missed the boat with the original Half Life so didn't really get caught up in the all the hype that surrounded it. Bought HL2 because of the hype that surrounded that (and for CS:S) and found it ok but personally preferred Doom 3.

For gameplay I would go along with the RTCW suggestion, absolutely loved that game and thought it was fantastic. Painkiller, again a fantastic game mainly because it was a pretty understated game when it was released and the mechanics were amazing for the time.

I remember that bit vividly too, especially when I retreated behind cover and they started lobbing grenades to flush me out :)

I think the whole Silent Gordon thing spoiled it slightly in the later games though, he came across as a bit of an idiot.

what ?

technically maxpayne and prototype are 3rd person shooter but i class third person shooters like that as fps in this sort of context.

technically? They are third person shooters, there's no technically about it! Thus they are not first person shooters :p

Yep Unreal came out 6 months before Halflife yet has better graphics and is a longer game. Everyone raves about the opening to halflife but Unreal wasn't half bad, great interactive introduction on Vortex Rikers, hearing somebody getting destroyed behind a door, reading the diaries, then level 2 stepping out into a MASSIVE open world (by 1998 FPS standards), then level 3 the unforgettable "corridor lights" set piece where you fight your first Skaarj.

IMO Deus Ex and Far Cry are both better than Halflife, although as a series HL is hard to match.

Yeah, I almost agree with that :) I personally wouldn't rate Far Cry above Unreal or HL....but it's not far behind. I've played pretty much every fps game since Operation Wulf I think. Just thinking of my top 10...single player only, pure fps only:

1. Doom 2
2. Half-Life
3. Half-Life 2
4. Unreal
5. Duke Nukem 3D
6. MOH: AA
7. F.E.A.R.
8. FarCry
9. Bioshock
10. COD 4: MW

Not including Deus Ex because it's more of a fps-rpg hybrid - and is also my favorite game ever.

I dread to think how many hours of my life those 10 have eaten

Codename Eagle deserves a worthy mention. I'd still pick HL1 over it but I remember it vividly, and it also gave birth to BF1942 which I spent years playing.
