The Jenson Button to McLaren Thread

Button's done the right thing, and maintained his head during that interview despite the ludicrous cries from Brawn of disloyalty. They've lost a lot of respect for that as it was a blatant throwing of the toys.

And who wants to sit around at Mercedes while they let Heidfeld come and play happy German families. The whole "you can't do this, but we're going to do this" double standard was infuriating.

Just watched that interview of Jenson's and if reaffirms the reason why I admire the guy so much. When Jake rattled him a bit about what he thought of Nick Fry's comments he just declined to judge and kept it cool.

He's a very mature guy, the opposite of how some of the Brawcedes Team are acting following his signature to McLaren.

Daddy Hamilton will not be amused.

McLaren won't be amused either. Unless of course both drivers run, swim and cycle in McLaren liveried clothing, in sync, side by side...thus turning it into a PR exercise for the McLaren team.

Lots of people forget just how much of a Corporate culture McLaren have.

Over the last few years we have seen Button sport lots of stubble. I have a strong suspicion that from 1st January onwards, he'll be clean shaven.

I remember when Alonso came to McLaren, he was made to cut his hair very short. The moment he got back to Renault, in rebellious fashion, he stopped cutting his hair and grew longer hair.

lets see if McLaren see if the triathlon is a good way to keep fit or a waste of time as some on here think

Waste of time? Hardly! Running, biking and swimming are all core to general fitness. Taking the time to actually compete in the events could be seen as a waste of time... but even then with the right PR such activities can reflect well on driver and team.

I expect Button to carry on with triathlon at McLaren.

There is a difference between 'training for fitness' and risking injury, while 'competing to a point where you are taking a lot out of yourself (when racing in triathlons)', to the detriment of your duties at McLaren. Remember, McLaren have a very strong corporate image and as such require their drivers/employees to attend many functions related to their sponsors. Drivers dont simply turn up on race weekends and race, then go AWOL for 1-2 weeks.

During the off season though, it is perfectly normal for employees to do as they please.

For drivers, McLaren are probably the strictest employers on the entire grid.

While at McLaren, even Alonso and Kimi were towing the company line and doing as they were told. It will be interesting to see how McLaren deal with this.

There was an interview with his trainer about how they're very careful with the races he win to minimize any chance of injury. He basically avoids the ironmans as the endurance side would be detrimental and avoids the very short ones as he would be too likely to get injured. I wouldn't be surprised if he is the fittest guy on the grid though - triathlon is tough.

I was always a bit sceptical of the claim made by commentators that F1 drivers are super fit athletes. I race triathlon, both the shorter Sprints than Jenson did and the longer half Ironman. I prefer the longer events these days.

Jenson came 2nd in the amateur field for his age group. That's a little bit flattering as he's the oldest in a group filled with kids who aren't that fast, the next group up is much faster and he wouldn't have been 2nd.

There was also some 50 or so triathlon pros racing and his time would have placed him in the low 40s if I remember correctly.

He's fit for sure, and could well be the fittest F1 driver. But he's not really fit like a pro athlete, I don't think any F1 drivers are.

Don't forget though that the fitness required for driving is different to that required for ironman events. Similarly, the fitness required for sprinting (say 100m), is different to that of ironman events.

His main focus has to be his driving, then pleasing sponsors and then his fitness.

Question: during the period of his 6 wins this year, did he compete in any events?

What do you decide as fit. Fit has lots of different meanings. I bet no one else in the entire Triathlon series could take the neck abuse of an F1 driver. It's all about being fit for your particular sport. Just like weight lifters are crap at running, carry far to much weight.

Well that makes little sense, his fitness has to be right up there or he can't be as effective a driver..
