I'll admit it, I'm pretty unhappy. And I say this knowing that there are quite a few others here that probably feel this way too.

Since most (or at least a big part) of your life is spent working, how do you/did you find what makes/made you happy? What was the process you went through? I've worked some crappy jobs, and some of them I wouldn't go back to even if they paid 50k a year as they made me so miserable.

Do you think that the career isn't important and that it is your family/hobbies that make your life great? Or a mixture?

find a job you like and you'll never work a day in your life or find a job to fund doing something you like.

pretty much your only 2 options. honestly, i think i can see myself doing the latter, but theres always that chance.

when you find something that makes you happy you'll know. Follow up on something your interested in and try and get into it properly?

Doing a job that you enjoy is probably the most important thing. A partner or a family can make you happy even if you are miserable in your job, but what happens if your partner or family is unhappy/depressed/going through a crisis? You want to be happy with yourself, not rely on other people to make you happy. That way, when they are sad or depressed, you can be there for them.

A good mix of all i think, i mean you dont have to have the best job in the world or loads of money but you do have to be fairly contented with your lott in life and have good friends.
For me i have a boring job with below average wages, and recently my relationship of 14 years ended, she walked out on me on my birthday 4 months ago 'which was nice':( and on top of that my elderly father needs to move out cos the house is probably being sold.

Im struggling but my very good friends are always there for me and with out them and my father i probably would have given up....

I'm afraid if you are looking for something external to you thats not gonna make you happy, it comes from inside without the need for anything....this is only real happiness.

Recently, reading a book about how to improve your life has made me very happy indeed. I feel like a new person (though it's still taking a lot of work!).

This sounds cheesy/meaningless but it is actually really accurate, in my experience. It comes down to understanding the difference between pleasure and happiness, in part. Check out the Dalai Lama's book, 'the art of happiness'. It's not wishy-washy really, and although I'm an atheist and find some parts of Buddhism a load of rubbish it's got some really good stuff in there. It's edited by a professional psychologist.

Remember, it is totally possible to learn how to be happy. It's not easy though.

There is no key - if there was a special formula for being happy this world would be a very boring place.

Finding what makes you happy is an adventure and after nealy 40 years I have found my happy place.

I have a beautiful wife (after getting out of a previous engagement), children I would kill for and a job, that for a change, is very hard work but very worthwhile.

I may be a fat git, but I am happy with life, I am happy with my family and I am happy with my job.

Your key is an adventure, no one can say do this, do that and that it.....get up off your arse and chase the dreams for a bit.....the key will be found that way, not by asking on a forum :)

Not having a dig, just the way I think about it......you gotta take the rough with the smooth and that way when you get to the happy place you will know its worthwhile and you will be happy :)

Pretty much the same but without the fat bit :D

Happiness comes from within, try to enjoy what you have rather than be upset by what you do not.

Sounds easy but it's not in this day and age my friend.

I'm finding it pretty easy so far :) . It takes some will power and a bit of "fake it 'till you make it" at first, but it does work.

I broke up with my girlfriend of nearly 3 years less than a month ago, I was gutted to say the least. As for now, I'm over her already. I'm getting on with my life and I'm genuinely happy :D . No other circumstances in my life have changed, I have made this feeling myself. As a side, it also involves learning how to pick up women (even though that's the goal, it's MUCH bigger than it appears from the outside).

oo and remember that even though you think you are in a crappy place at the moment regarding life / job, that is actually a good place to be.

You have identified that you are not happy and are willing to do something about it - the only way is up, now chin up, enjoy what you have and think how you (and you only) can start to climb toward the happy place.

Jeeez, I knew I should have been a hippy......

Easiest way (as said in the first reply) is to be happy in what you do.

Given that I enjoy going to work, I fall into that category.

It differs, I used to think the be all and end all was a job you like, which luckily I have. But in reality that didn't actually make me that happy. I think, I happiest when I'm spending time with friends.

Happiness really is a mindset I'm afraid. You could have the best job in the world, great family etc. but if you're a pessimistic person, the type who's never happy with their lot/always wants more - then you won't be happy whatever you do.

I used to be a bit like that, always wanting a better job, always wishing I had more money. But after getting spectacularly dumped at the beginning of last year, I knew I didn't want to mope around and was fed up with feeling sorry for myself, so I changed my outlook on life, decided I'd be more positive about the things I do have, rather than the things I don't.

And to tell you the truth, I'm happier now than I've ever been! :)
