The Kings International Gauntlet 2007

I was just thinking, how about sticking a thread into GH or GD and seeing if we could recruit some more members to this? There may be some boincers there who are on the team but don't come here and we may be able to recruite some new ones who may stay on at the end and help the team out?

Dunno if pimping GD for members a matter of weeks before the Folding@Home team are planning to do the same thing will go down so well. Anyone who is interested in DC may well join up to SETI and then the Folding compo (which has had a lot of thought and effort put in already) will be a bit 'up the creek' as it were because everyone has already joined SETI.

But the folding team do a pimping thread quite regularily, SETI havent had one in a very long time. Maybe (especially as its a comp) SETI should have a chance to pimp for once?

EDIT: just seen the folding comp thread brought from the dead, I suppose that changes things a little... :(

Don't worry, the folding thread is going in the gh, and its not going to coincide with this. :)

Do you think it's simply a matter of SETI fatigue still latent from back in the days of yore?
Nah - it's just that all and sundry pop out of the woodwork and berate SETI for being useless, pointless, and generally crap.

I didn't get the impression that the seti classic thread was at all bad. I don't think a bad word was said in it, mainly because the usefulness of seti wasn't even mentioned, it was purely for the competition. This should be the shame. I'm certainly not competing in the hope of finding aliens...

And regarding the folding threads, if you remember, the 'lets beat the Russians' thread was quite a success, simply because the focus was on competition.

You also have to remember that there's a constant flow of new members joining this forum and old ones leaving, so the people who were reading the gd a year or so ago have most likely changed a lot.

Still doesn't change the fact that if SETI does it first and everyone joins that, they'll be very few people about left wanting to join the folding comp. It wasn't a matter of them happening at the same time...

Well i wouldn't have thought that the seti people will continue doing it after the competition... i suppose some might though.

I don't think there's an issue with lack of people, the proportion of people in this forum who participate in a dc project is very low.

Those 'some that might' are surely the ones we want to be grabbing to fold as opposed to a huge bunch of people who just turn it off again?

True i suppose.

But won't the team or teams for the kig be different from the main ocuk seti team? In which case there wouldn't be a lot of point anyone continuing running seti after the kig ends...

Would it be a problem if some people who were running seti for the kig moved over to folding after it finished?

I don't think there's a shortage of people interested in this stuff, i reckon there will be plenty of people left over for each competition to get a decent intake.

I was under the impression that the KIG was Boincwide and not limited to SETI. So having a bunch of people bash the science of SETI isn't a problem as you can direct them to projects like Einstein or Rosetta or CPDN or Leiden or Microfluids.

Of course as Rosetta does much the same as Folding, it might have a slight negative impact on the efforts of the origami pimps around here.

You worried about a little competition for the souls of would be crunchers D_M? ;)
I thought it was all for the benefit of science anyway. :p

I think I'll do this. Which project should I crunch? Are any optimized for SSE2 for optimum cobbly love?
I think SETI is the only project for optimised clients - though I could be more wrong than anybody has ever been :p

There was a big furore over optimised clients in SETI not that long ago. Accusations of cheating and toys being thrown out of the pram on all sides.

Rosetta offers credit scaled by the number of completed models crunched in a WU lasting a set period of time (default is three hours I think). It'll make sense if you look at my results under participant profiles.
Einstein WU's are quite generous at the moment.
CPDN used to offer fixed credit per 'trickle' which I think means fast machines rack up big scores pretty fast.

I don't pay too much attention to credit really. I'm genuinely more interested in the worthiness of the science. [/halo] :o

The Boincstats forums is probably a good place to ask around. :)

Personally I couldn't care less, I just think it would be a bit annoying for those who have put effort into setting up the Folding comp and figuring stuff out if three weeks before it starts, everyone starts BOINCing and no one bothers...
