The lack of photo threads around these parts§

I totally agree that there should be more photo threads though, gear gear gear is a bit dull and I see little value in 'new toy' threads.

That statement i think can go two ways. If the OP puts up I've got new toys but then fails to follow things up with pictures from it then it is just a willy waving exercise of I have x amount of pounds to spend on camera equipment.

However I think there is merit if the topic is continued to show photographs with the new toys and more importantly if there are any comments with regard to quality of images. Whether thats simply a sharper image rather than composition etc which you can learn on any camera.

As an example of this i would say my recent 70 - 200 topic (willy waving) i did follow it up with some critique on my footy photos and I understood that some people wouldn't like them simply cos their footy ones but thats not the issue. I cant remember off hand if there were any comments on clarity / sharpness of the final images in comparison to my old 70 - 300 but I have had some comments from the football club programme editor as well as the local paper journalist and his editor on exactly that and they couldn't tell the difference between my photos and a professionals. Now this is only one example but I'm sure I commented on ScarySquirrels photos when he got a new lens a while back (may be wrong on the person) but if you can see a difference in the images before / after then i think to a degree willy waving topics can be ok :D

Agree with Ray that the new photo threads have taken a dive but I didn't realise it was all going in that mega general thread. I put it down to people being busy with other real life things.

Can't remember the last time I posted a few photos on OcUK. Have been doing some stuff through work, blog idents and headshots that might have some interest for folks but the more I do them the more I realise that the technical knowledge is second to the ability to build immediate rapport and coax out a relaxed expression. Would be great to discuss things like that with everyone.

I would hope any new people don't find this part of the forum scary. We were all beginners once ...

I miss Scary Squirrel and his pictures of his lovely partner... I blame the lack of photo thread on this!

Haha! Thanks.

I rarely come in here these days, purely because I've not picked up my camera for a couple of months.

I've been spending more time on the admin side of wedding photography, and I'm now a little worried that I've got a fair few weddings confirmed, and yet I've not picked up a camera for so long!!

I've got an engagement shoot next month, as well as a charity event, but I plan to pick the camera up again in the next week or so!

To be fair i give up posting in this forum ages ago, because no one ever seemed to read or reply to the thread's unless you were a well known poster.

Myself for exmaple only ever post motorsport photos. But when a thread gets created and maybe only get's one reply why go the effort of creating the thread?

I'm taking lots of photos of Toms gf this weekend, I'll post a thread about it next week.

Happy now? :p

You better be you ******* I'm driving a 500 mile round trip to satisfy your craving for a new photo thread.

My god I'm whipped :(

I Bought a 40D with Kit Lens, bought myself a Nifty Fifty and never really managed to achieve results i was happy with. Kind of gave up after that :(

Bit of a step up from my old P&S, strugged with getting white balance correct etc.. Doesnt help either i'm aiming too high as some of you guys on here are so talented.

I agree that sub forums would be better and might help in keeping photos and gear separate.

I do post threads of shoots that I've been on but since I nearly always shot with Slothmeister and he doesn't have a family at home, he tends to upload his images first so it seems pointless me posting nearly identical shots in yet another thread.

I do however try to post the images that I've taken differently on these shoots due to my 'arty' p&p style... lol

As for the whole newb's not getting comments, I think that this is a direct result of the standards here being quite high.

maybe we need another couple of sub forums....

'Photo's to be C&C'd' where even the newest of togs can post images without the fear of them being lost into the masses and a 'omg I'm awesome, look at these' where the point is to simply showcase your work and not to get C&C.

my 2 cents. :)

Surely it depends on peoples tastes too?

I've never really done or been interested in motorsport photography...so I wouldn't comment on it as I couldn't offer proper constructive criticism. However, portrait and studio work, I'll talk about all day long :)

Auto White Balance

Use auto white balance and shoot raw - problem pretty much solved really - no need to be concerned in most situations with the white balance then.

This is to do with subject matter, i hate motor-sports and find motor-sports photography boring. Therefore I cannot really comment on the photos.

I think most people on the forum like nature and portraits/wedding, with some street and urban stuff.

Everybody starts somewhere...bloody hell you should see some of my first photos which I thought were 'awesome' :p

lol, only the other day I was looking at a photo I took on the first day I got a DSLR and at the time I thoughts it was 'awesome'. Now i look at it and can reel off a million things wrong with it.

the main thing being it's a crap photo of some rust. :)

I shudder at my early photos, and too remember thinking they were pretty good!

That statement i think can go two ways. If the OP puts up I've got new toys but then fails to follow things up with pictures from it then it is just a willy waving exercise of I have x amount of pounds to spend on camera equipment.

That's a good point, threads with photos taken with new gear are worthwhile as it can often open up another style of aspect of the persons photography. Might actually do this for something I got recently...

Another good point; it used to be easy ripping the photos from flickr where mine are already uploaded but they changed things to stop that. The effort of uploading somewhere and copy+pasting 5 addresses isn't worth the hassle unless you get something back.

I don't tend to start a new thread as I don't have a nything worthy. Being busy I haven't done anything interesting for ages, I've just been doing family and friends stuff. I'm in Edinburgh airport at the moment with a 5 hour wait until my flight. I wish I had brought my camera so I could have spent some time elsewhere getting some shots!

Also I don't tend to reply or offer crit very much as I don't feel qualified :)

I haven't been uploading any shots recently as I haven't been processing any shots. I haven't been processing any shots because I haven't been taking any shots! Running and Hiking has taken over my weekends now. Hopefully I will find a happy balance between photography and the rest of life at some point.

Edit; The gear lust hasn't gone away though, as I have been trying to convince myself that I would be taking more photos if I had a light range-finder setup. The Fuji X100 looks tasty! :D
