Stalker 2 8/10

Being a fan of the older series. Atmospherically it was great, especially Pripyat. Some of the lower end weapons could do with re-balancing (AK-74 for example) AI is much better now, more smarter as they flank you when in cover. Overall the whole Zone is incredibly well recreated. Story is a little difficult to keep up with. Other than those great!

Prey (2017). 10/10.

One of the best games I've played, for my tastes. This is an immersive sim and I think as such there are some who will love it and some who might not get it. The setting, story and lore are just stunning with a remarkable amount of real science blended into it. Really loved digging all of the little details out of terminals and voice recordings as a storytelling mechanism.

I initially found it quite challenging as I'm bad at any sort of stealth or generally difficult combat. But the game really rewards careful exploration and taking your time. One of those games that you start out underpowered and by the end you've completed most of the skill trees, upgraded everything and it's a lot more manageable.

Graphics were acceptable, though not exactly polished. Still I loved the overall aesthetic and especially views of space. It was really amazing going into true zero gravity and being free to float around without a sense of up or down. The sort of game that really suits a big screen for sure.

I plugged 85 hours in and saw all the endings in one session. There is a New Game Plus mode but I think I pretty much rinsed the game first time round. I'm not bothered about extra challenging runs like no upgrades, and no extra endings to unlock so I'll probably stop here. I really am tempted just to start again immediately though!

Highly recommended if you are into sci-fi and it definitely was an original experience, which not many games manage now.

Red Dead 1 - 7/10

Never played this back in the day as I've only ever had PCs. Really enjoyed it, especially on the Steam Deck but it's definitely a cut below the sequel. I can see why it was praised so much when it came out and it's aged fairly well.

£32 is a complete rip off though (and that was on sale).

I love this game. I really want a patch for the PS version so it would be 60 fps, but very unlikely to happen now apparently :(

Yep. Shame they did not continue making more of them.

I have dlc for it that I have yet to play.

Yeah it's quite sad they probably won't make another like it. I may go back and look at other immersive sims. Maybe when I've spent some time playing shorter games :D

Monster Hunter Wilds: Gameplay 9/10, Story 2/10

This is a very strange one and hard to score. In terms of its gameplay, it's probably the best Monster Hunter has ever been. The new Monsters are great, the location design is decent and varied and the weapons all feel "just right". When the game lets you just... y'know... hunt monsters, things are fantastic.

But oh my word the story campaign is badly misjudged. The cutscenes are too long, too talky and frankly just boring. There seems to have been no editorial control over the script, with dialogue allowed to just meander and characters frequently saying the most inane **** imaginable. Even the voice performances are off, with characters often speaking far too slowly. Nata isn't quite the most irritating child character to ever feature in a game - Malo, from Twilight Princess, will forever hold that accolade - but he comes close. If the game let me craft Nata-skin armour and maybe a Nata-bone Charge Blade, I'd have been all over that. Too often, it felt like I'd beat a story fight, be rewarded with loot and then punished with more story. Worst of all are the slowly-walk-and-talk sections, which aren't even skippable.

Once the story is done and dusted, the game is fantastic. But they really do make you slog through an utter penance of a campaign before letting you at the good stuff.

Oh, and it's a technical mess on a PC, with a few hitches visible even on my 7950X3D/5090 combo.

Atomfall 7/10

Coming from Rebellion who made the Sniper Elite series, I truly wanted this to be an amazing game. It has got lots of good features and has some of the 'English' charm that it was desperately seeking, basing the game in England in the 1950's, but it also has some of the somewhat primitive gameplay that the Sniper Elite games suffered from. The story, dialogue and game mechanics are generally good with the player left to find their own way through the games' story choosing a game style that suits them. I found this lack of 'signposting' a little frustrating at times however, as I did not know whether I was choosing the correct choices or the correct 'leads' to follow, but maybe that is the whole point. I finished the game in under 12 hours, but I think you could add a few more hours if you wanted to follow every trail or wanted to explore every location thoroughly. I have to say that I found the ending a bit lack-lustre, but overall not a terrible game and I hope Rebellion continue to take risks with game developments like this again in the future.
